LAPD start fresh Notorious BIG murder investigation

#1
It has almost been ten years since the untimely murder of rap-legend Notorious BIG and the perpetrator has yet to be bought to justice. LA’s Assistant City Attorney, Don Vincent, announced March 16th that the LAPD has assigned a new squad of detectives to investigate the case which has not been closed since 1997. The hope is that a new team will be able to examine available information from a fresh perspective in order to make some much needed progress.

Four years ago Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace took two corrupt policemen to court. She alleged that Rafael Perez and David Mack conspired with music mogul Suge Knight in the murder of her son. She also sued the city of Los Angeles for the wrongful death of her son. It is most likely that these suits arose from the frustration of corruption, inaction and bureaucracy surrounding her son’s death.

But in July of 2005 a mistrial was declared after evidence was provided which proved the LAPD had deliberately concealed information relating the murder of the rapper. However, because there was no evidence to show that the LAPD was directly involved in his murder, a fine was the extent of their punishment. The LAPD was ordered to $1.1million to Ms. Wallace’s legal team.

A retrial is expected later this year.

The LAPD has consistently denied withholding information in the case.
