Doctor, consumer group sue KFC

By BRETT BARROUQUERE, Associated Press Writer Tue Jun 13, 5:28 PM ET

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A doctor and a consumer group have sued KFC in an effort to stop the chicken chain from cooking with high-fat partially hydrogenated oil.

Dr. Arthur Hoyte, a retired physician from Rockville, Md., and the Center for Science in the Public Interest, want a judge to order Kentucky Fried Chicken to use other types of cooking oils or make sure customers know about trans fat content immediately before they make a purchase.

KFC spokeswoman Laurie Schalow called the lawsuit frivolous and said the company will fight it in court. Schalow said KFC is looking at using other types of oil for cooking, but it is committed to maintaining "KFC's unique taste and flavor."

KFC provides nutrition and fat information to consumers online and in restaurants, Schalow said.

"We have for a very long time," she said.

Michael Jacobsen, the executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said Louisville-based KFC parent company Yum Brands Inc. knows that other, healthier cooking products are available.

"KFC knows this, yet it recklessly puts its customers at risk of a Kentucky Fried Coronary," Jacobsen said.

Hoyte said he is suing to force KFC to change its cooking practices "for my son and others' kids, so they may have a healthier, happier, trans-fat-free future."

"If I had known that KFC uses an unnatural frying oil, and that their food was so high in trans fat, I would have reconsidered my choices," Hoyte said.

Hoyte and the consumer group are seeking class-action status for the lawsuit and asking a judge to let Hoyte represent anyone who ate at a Washington, D.C.-area KFC in 2004 and 2005. Along with stopping KFC from using oil with trans fats, they are asking for a variety of economic damages.

The Food and Drug Administration says trans fat raises bad cholesterol. The government agency this year started requiring food labels to list trans fats.

The lawsuit is the second time in the last three years that KFC and the Center for Science in the Public Interest have crossed paths.

KFC settled a complaint filed by the group with the Federal Trade Commission in 2004 over ads claiming its fried chicken was compatible with then-popular low-carb diets.

Under the settlement, KFC also was barred from running advertisements saying that eating its food is healthier than eating another food unless it can back the claims up scientifically.

Now I'm a manager at KFC but that's not why this irritates me. I'm just sicking of seeing fat bastards suing fast food companies because they're fat. Nobody is forcing your fat ass to eat fast food. There are hundreds of alternatives to eating fast food high in fat. Most places now offer low fat foods, like salads, so instead of eating a Big Mac, try a salad, fat ass. Or how bout this for an alternative, cook your own damn food....but that wouldn't work now would it cause then there'd be nobody to sue when you're still fat. My thing is, fried chicken is fattening, period. I don't give a damn what kind of oil you cook it in, it's still fattening. If you're that concerned about eating foods high in fat content, don't fucking eat fried chicken. Damn. Matter of fact, anything fried is pretty much fattening. So if you're going into a restaurant called Kentucky FRIED Chicken, chances are the food is fattening dumb ass. Suing them is not going to stop the people who love fried chicken from eating at KFC, and I'm quite sure the number of people that will eat KFC regardless far outnumber the ones that are concerned about fat content.

I heard about them getting sued a couple years ago about kinda the same thing.. I used to work at KFC for like a little more then a month when I was 17.. Damn, that shit is mad greasy.. But I'll still eat it any chance I get! :hungry: KFC's the shit.. I remember me and this mexican chic would go smoke behind the dumpsters around closing when we did the garbage.. :hungry:

btw I'm off to Bermuda in 7 hours.. BB next week.. Peace yall!

people are entitled to know the nutrition (or lack thereof) facts of anything they purchase. hiding behind the secret blend of seven different greases and fats is not an excuse. we all consume bad food now and then, but without knowledge of what's in a particular food exactly, i'd tend not to touch it.

The only thing secret about KFC is the 11 herbs and spices in the original recipe chicken, and I'd bet I can guess the majority of those myself though even KFC restaurants do not know what they are, they're not even printed on the packets the blend comes in. Nutritional facts are available for everything on the menu, as stated in the article. The company requires us to have on hand at all times nutritional guides for the customers. So the only way they'd not know is that either they can't read or can't comprehend what the facts mean. The kind of oil used to fry the chicken is no secret, it's printed right on the box the oil and the shortening blocks comes in. I'm not exactly sure what it is, but I can let ya know when I'm back online tomorrow night.

man.. that story has some comical quotes but this one is the best.

Hoyte said he is suing to force KFC to change its cooking practices "for my son and others' kids, so they may have a healthier, happier, trans-fat-free future."

Here is a pointer dumbass. Your kid's eating habit is acquired early in life. Be smart and make sure your kid's eating habit is healthy.

I'm sueing the video game company because I bought my child a violent video game.

I'm sueing GM because car exhaust is bad for my kid's health.

There goes my Tuesdays at KFC:woah: Churches Chicken is probably better:thumb:

I don't think you're educated enough on the subject of nutrition and biochemistry to understand what you're saying... though I ultimately agree with you, nobody is forcing these people to eat fast food... the fact doesn't change that KFC's food is actually nothing short of garbage.

The same thing happened with Oreos. Some dude decided to sue because they used trans fats. How do you not know that coookies and fast food are unhealthy? These people act like they've uncovered some big secret. They just want some attention.

I never said I was educated in nutrition, I don't hafta be to know that fried chicken is fattening and I'm pretty sure I said before that it's fattening. I'm not disagreeing with that point. What irritates me is that these people eat this stuff knowing it's not healthy and then sue when they get fat. And it's not just eating KFC that's making them fat, it's eating unhealthy foods period. I can name at least a dozen people that I see in KFC every other, if not every, day that are skinny as hell and have no health problems whatsoever. On that same note, I can also name that many or more that are fat and unhealthy. It's not just fast food that makes them fat, it's a lifetime of bad eating habits and then they have the nerve to sue somebody because they grew up eating unhealthy and eat unhealthy as adults. If you wanna sue somebody, sue your damn parents for starting those habits to begin with.
The lawsuit is going nowhere anyway. The only thing that's gonna happen is that they'll make it a law to have nutrition guides available at every restaurant, but then it might already be a law, I don't know but fact of the matter is, if you eat fast food all the time and you're fat, it's nobody's fault but your own. So instead of sitting on your fat ass suing somebody, get off your fat ass and exercise. Do something about being fat instead of just sitting there and getting some money off of somebody else because you're fat.

I don't even disagree with you, i'm 100% on the same page with you. But if you read what Dante said, you have to understand... being skinny is in NO WAY an indication of a clean bill of health. Secondly, we all know KFC is bad for you... but if you really study what that type of food does to your body, I promise you.... you really might consider never touching fast food in your entire life... not even once a month or once a year... simply never again. It's horrible and disgusting food... too bad the same way they make KFC's chicken is the same way they're making alot of food these days...

Either way, I understand your argument and agree with you... I still think people should be educated more on what KFC does and I would go as far as to say... KFC should offer healthier chicken and still serve the other nasty ass chicken that preserves the "taste" they so love to make.

Oh no doubt all fast food is bad for you. That's why I rarely eat out. But I don't think there's a way to make fried chicken healthier. There's no kind of oil made that can make it healthy. We did have rotisserie chicken at one time but it didn't go over well so we quit with it. I guess people go into KFC to eat fried chicken and aren't so much health concious til it's time to sue somebody, ya know? But I looked at the box the block shortening comes in and it's soybean. I'm not too sure bout the liquid shortening we use cause we were out when I checked.

Nothin is wrong with KFC, KFC does what its supose to do sell fried chicken. good fried chicken. anyone that has worked there, i worked there for over a year would probably have same answers on shit it just depends on how they look at it-because fast food work ain't really pleasent. everybody who consumes the motherfucka know what theyre gettin what problems could happen etc etc but its just food. everybody is responsible for theirown actions
