The nominations for the 48th Annual Grammy Awards were announced today in New York City, and for the second year in a row Kanye West topped the list of artists garnering nods.

West, his R&B protégé John Legend and Mariah Carey each earned eight Grammy nods, followed closely by Beyonce Knowles, Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani, Missy Elliott, and 50 Cent, who all pulled in at least five nominations each.

Among the nominees for Best Rap Song are "Candy Shop" by 50 Cent featuring Olivia, West's "Diamonds From Sierra Leone", The Black Eyed Peas' "Don't Phunk With My Heart", "Hate It Or Love It" by The Game featuring 50 Cent and "Lose Control" by Missy Elliott Featuring Ciara & Fat Man Scoop.

The Best Rap Album Category includes Common's album Be, Elliott's The Cookbook, Eminem's Encore, 50's The Massacre and West's Late Registration.

West scored ten Grammy nominations last year and ended up walking away with three awards. This year his sophomore album, Late Registration, received nods in Album of the Year and his single "Gold Digger" was recognized in the Record of the Year and Best Rap Solo Performance categories. He's also up for best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "They Say" along with fellow Chicagoan Common and Legend.

After the nominations were read at a press conference this morning, Legend took the time to praise West, telling CNN, "We love making music and we dream about these kinds of moments where we get recognized."

Some of Legend's nominations included Best New Artist and his "Ordinary People" scored nods for Best R&B Song and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

Speaking of R&B, it's already been a huge year for Mariah, who recently brought home five Billboard awards and four Vibe awards. Carey scored huge nominations from the RecordingAcademy including Record of the Year for "We Belong Together;" Song of the Year, also for "We Belong Together;" and Album of the Year for The Emancipation of Mimi. The album also earned honors for Best Contemporary R&B Album of the Year, Best R& B Song of the Year ("We Belong Together"), Best Female R& B Vocal Performance ("We Belong Together"), Best Traditional R&B Performance for "Mine Again" and Best Female Pop Performance for "It's Like That."

Award nominations are for recordings released during the eligibility year October 1, 2004 through September 30, 2005. The 48th Annual Grammy Awards will be held on Sunday, February 8 in Los Angeles.
