Born and raised in Watts, California in the Nickerson Garden Projects Jay Rock was brought up around a street environment.
Being around the Nickerson Garden Projects; it was no wonder Jay got into the rap game with many aspiring musical figures such as Harry O (Co-founder of Death Row Records) and Operation From The Bottom (Former Death Row Record's Group) gowing up around the area.
At the age of twelve Jay showed an interest in music playing the keyboard and writing poems. Soon after getting in trouble at school and getting public housing Jay Rock started banging.
After shopping his demo around he eventually earned a deal with Warner Brothers, which was rather surprising because Warner's past deals of dropping Death Row and being too soft core for a Tupac Shakur album.
