Why or why not?

For example, if you were a hockey player making $9 mill a year. 50% of your salary goes to paying taxes. Even though you pay taxes just like everyone else (middle-class or poor) you are over-taxed just because you make more money. Is that fair? Why?
 
your example is fundamentally incorrect. It's all relative, and it's all in proportion. Yes, in terms of whole numbers you ARE paying more, but proportionately, it is equal.
 
not really. Rich people still pay tax as everybody else. If you earn more money you pay much more even it it's the same % as everybody else pays. For example 20% off 20k$ is still twice as much as 20% off 10k$.
Also, here where I live we pay taxes depending on our salaries. People with higher ones simply don't pay taxes because they are unfairly high and would take up to 70% of their money. Their companies wouldn't be affordable if they actually paid those taxes.
The government tries to force same taxes for everyone. It's a bit unfair for poor people but on the other hand they already get a bunch of benefits and such.

Also keep in mind that whatever you buy, taxes are included in its price. Why would an expensive car be more expensive just because it's already expensive? It'd rise the difference between the poor and rich.
 
As for your hockey player example even if they took half that 9 mil he'd still have 4.5 mil which is certainly enough to live on, its not like he'd be struggling. The money needs to come from somewhere and the poor/middle class don't have the advantage of 4.5 million a year.
 
why should the middle class be over taxed when these richer classes aren't? it should be everybody taxed equal at the very least. it's normal that if you make more money you contribute more to society than those who make less. i don't understand why richer classes should be taxed less because they wouldn't be profitable if taxed the same. in an ideal world everybody should be taxed the same for the same services. but that is not happening.
 
Everyone should be taxed equally. Rich people should not be penalized for their success. However, rich people should WANT to contribute more...say in the form of donations to private organizations or something. If they don't contribute charities and they are making millions a year...then fuck em, Karma will get them later.

So its OK to tax the hockey player that makes 9 mil just because he still has half of his money left? It doesn't matter that he worked hard for that money and that he is losing income just for the fact that he makes more money than the people that aren't? Is that really fair?

There are a lot of risks that come with being a hockey player. One of them is being seriously injured, as with any contact sport.

What's your life really worth to you? Only $ 4.5 mill?

No its not because he has half his money left, its that he has $4.5 mil left! He worked hard at it yeah, he played sport well enough to give some richer guys in an office a reason to want him on their team. He gets to do alot of things other people cant, people who might be working 3 jobs just to make ends meet which they can't on minimum wage. So if we stop taxing the hockey player who will we tax? The people who cant afford to live already?
The risks to hockey players are there, but so are risks in every job. Why don't we pay soldiers in Iraq $9 mil? I would consider their jobs more dangerous than a guy on ice with a stick.
 
i'm all for. the alternative is to raise everyone's taxes, fucking over those who aren't well off. the world changes, so measures change. it makes more sense to take 4,5 million from someone who makes 9, than it does to take another 2-3,000 a year from those who make 25,000.
 
Well, to "over-tax" people is obviously wrong. The term already gives the answer. The question is where does over-taxing begin?!

In the case of the hockey player who has to pay 4,5 million for taxes: Its absolutely ok! No one needs an income of 4,5 million a year and if you cant get by with it you are doing something fundamentally wrong.

Everyone should be taxed equally.
Like I said, if somebody owns a company and they take 50% off him he'll sell his products for 200% of their previous value. It'll only rise the difference between poor people and those who are wealthy. Obviously it's illogical to overtax anyone, especially rich people who worked hard to be rich. If they got overtaxed nobody would afford a Ferrari or a villa which would get even more expensive. It would fuck up the economy if they actually paid those taxes. And I assure you that those taxes wouldn't be used in a right way by the government. Poor people wouldn't profit much. There are not so many rich people and most tax money comes from those poorer/casual masses.

In the first place you might think that a hockey player earning 9million is wrong and that is true in my opinion. But overtaxing them is not a way out.
 
Would you please define what you mean by over-taxing someone? Where does it begin? What percentage of someones income?
 
If you take more % of someone's salary just because he earns more money is overtaxing to me.
For example if 50k/year is a barrier then if somebody makes 48k and pays 30% taxes and then there's somebody who earns 55k and pays 40% just because he earns more - that's overtaxing. In fact he'll see less money than the other dude with a bit lower salary.
