Republic of Ireland football manager Steve Staunton has been threatened at gunpoint at a hotel near Dublin.

He reportedly fled inside the Portmarnock Hotel when he saw a man pull the weapon.

Staunton was not injured in the incident.

A man in his early 30s was arrested and is being detained in Malahide Garda Station.

The incident occurred outside the main entrance of the hotel where the Ireland squad is staying ahead of tomorrow's friendly against Holland.

A spokeswoman for the Garda Press Office said: "Gardai in Malahide arrested a man this evening (Monday) following an armed incident in Portmarnock.

"A man was threatened with a firearm."

The Football Association of Ireland is to undertake a review of security following the incident.

A spokesman said: "Steve Staunton is absolutely fine and looking forward to training."

Staunton was appointed manager of Ireland in January after the country failed to qualify for the World Cup under predecessor Brian Kerr.
