I agree with that and most of what you're saying. Only thing I disagree with is

the bottom line is that I don't differentiate people based on skin color and still manage to get into racially awkward situations cause I'm naive and ignorant. I don't think I deserve shit for it, so then I kinda have to believe this guy doesn't either, yeh?

you comparing your situation to his. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but when you speak your opinion or act on it, it's different. If you, through ignorance, inadvertantly make an insensitive comment to a black guy, no problem. But when you start talking about "black people ..." and your opinion is ripe with ignorance, I don't see anything wrong with people getting angry at any racism, intentional or unintentional. Racism has become a social disease and tolerance for it isn't high in my book. This guy took his opinion and used it to affect other people (nothing that serious but it shouldn't have happened). I don't agree that this should be made into a story where his actions are merely written off as racism though. That wasn't what he was doing and it distracts from the real issue.

I'm all for people being allowed to think what they want but sometimes this whole "I should be able to voice my opinion!" mentality can fuck off. Voice your opinion in your basement but keep it out of society if you don't want to be taken accountable for your ignorance.
