So it's almost 3:30 in the morning and I can't sleep. Anyone have some suggestions? I tried everything I could think of except sleeping pills, because I don't have any. I even tried a glass of warm milk (it's gross, don't try it), but nothing has worked.

Reading till your eyes hurt, hot milky drinks - something like horlicks, warm baths, night nurse or go to your doctor and get something stronger.

You're not an insomniac. However, the reason you can't fall asleep is because you're not active enough in daily life, bottom line.

Well I am one tonight. I normally do not have trouble sleeping, and I do live a fairly active life, so that's not it, no bottom line. live2tell, I tried reading as well, but I only got interested in what I was reading and that woke me up even more lol

OK. I was too bold with my statement. Umm, are you stressed out? Is there a lot on your mind? Are you too excited about something? Have you been fairly active in the last couple of days?

This is a common truth with misdiagnosed insomniacs. I had this problem once. WHO AM I KIDDING CHECK OUT MY POST COUNT/.

lol@Big Easy. Sofistik, I can answer no to all of those questions, except about being active, I played a fairly exhausting game of tennis today (First time I played tennis, I never realized how hard of a sport that is) I was worn out all day until around midnight, then I seemed to get a second wind, and now here I am. If only I had some bud, that usually helps me sleep

Wouldn't worry too much if it's not a recurring problem. When I can't sleep sometimes I go for a walk, works good when its cold out because as soon as I get back in the warmth I'm usually sleepy. Plus you could always drink enough alcohol until you pass out.

Well if I had some alcohol or weed it wouldn't be a problem, unfortunately I don't have either right now. I'm seriously considering going out to a spot to pick up some weed, if there's any late night dealers out, but I have to go thru a pretty dicey area to get there, so I probably won't

Yup insomniac right here, i've gotten about 4 hours sleep since saturday and all up about 7 since the saturday before that.
Well here's what people tell me that should work (i'll explain the reason for my bad sleeping later on in this thread so you don't have to read it if u can't be fucked)
Try these (they don't work for me):
Excersise before you sleep
Read before you sleep
go for a walk
sleep somewhere different, go lie on the couch or something
Turn off your computer and anything else that will make noise or distract you.
Go have a shower
have some pasta
Have some warm milk
Try and stay awake (no shit)
Turn the TV off (if your TV is on usually)
Turn the TV on and have it running in the background (if it's off usally)
Don't smoke, eat any sugar or drink coffee or tea
(the list goes on)

Don't try sleeping tablets it's the worst thing you can ever do. Despite my terrible sleeping i will never go to them. You'll just get very moody/snappy, your body is just fucked, your physically drained (this is after you wake up)... everything is fucked. Never try sleeping tablets. Plus your body can become dependent on them.

Now, apparently there are a few reasons for my insomnia. Befor i give these reasons i'll just give which brain waves associate with what during the day and when u sleep.

Beta Waves - day dreaming etc
Alpha waves - mediations
The 2 stages above are the first stages of sleep as well. then we have
Theta waves - Half asleep (the stage u go to before you actually fall asleep)
Delta waves- deep sleep, where REM occurs
REM - deep deep deep sleep, happens ony during delta waves

Apparently my brain functions normally for the first 2 stages but i'm missing some of the other waves, it's as if my brain doesn't fall into those cycles (or it does, but not properly or for long enough). But i fall into REM sleep pretty quickly which makes me feel refreshed after an hour or so of sleeping (it generally takes a normal person 90 minutes to get to REM). The reason i have trouble actually falling asleep is because my brain wave patterns aren't quite right so i just can't fall asleep, but when i do it's short lived. Every now and then i might get a few hours sleep (like a normal person 6-8 hours) but generally speaking, it doesn't happen that often. I have actually slept for 22-24 hours straight once and that was after over 6 days of NO sleep what so ever (not even being able to close my eyes).
Now the funniest thing is, the less i sleep the quicker i fall into my cycles which means the less i sleep, the less sleep i need to feel refreshed. So on a busy week i suddenly get about 4-5 hours sleep without ever being that tired.

When i went to a sleeping clinic they played all this different music and different sounds to see what gets my brain wave activity happening and apparenlty not many sounds had any effect. But i do seem able to take quick power naps in bus's. I often get a bit fucked up from 4-6 in the afternoons but after that i have a new boost of energy in me. i try and nap from 4-6 but it's barely every happened simply because i get busy
I think that's the gist of it all. I'm not quite 100% on what the doctors were telling me but that's pretty much all i gathered. It can be annoying at times (like right now i'm feeling pretty tired but i can't sleep, might try again soon) but it gives me time to do many other things.

it is very true about not being active throughout the day so u cant sleep at night.. you can tell your an insomniac when u feel physically drained but ur brain wont go to rest and u can't stop thinking or u have racing thoughts. i got prescribed to the sleeping pill trazodone, it works good and it doesnt make u feel all groggy in the morning.

How often does it happen? I know there's times where I can't sleep, but it's not like it happens every night. Plus, it only happens when I try to go to bed earlier than normal. It's like I haven't been up long enough to already go to bed. I'm back on a shitty schedule where I go to bed at like 5am, so if I try to go to bed at like 1-2, it just doesn't happen. Last time I tried, I didn't fall asleep til' like 5-6.
