I Have A Car Problem

I have a 2002 Honda Civic DX with about 63,000 miles on it. I've never had an issue with it except for having to change the brakepads and turn the rotors last year. For the last few months, I have been hearing a very annoying rattling/screeching noise whenever my foot is on the brake and I'm on an incline, even a slight one.

So, I brought it to the Dealer (because other shops couldn't figure out what it was) and they told me that they located the problem.

Now, I don't know shit about cars but this is what I was told: There is a pipe inside of the exhaust pipe that has come lose and it's banging around in there and causing the irritating noise. He said there's no real problem with the car at all. He said that the only way to fix it is to replace the entire exhaust pipe which would be $190.00 plus about an hour or so of labor so I'm looking at $260.00 total for the job.

Does this make sense? And, if so, does the solution/price sound appropriate?

I'm thinking of bringing my car somewhere else to have them look at it.

Your car makes a noise when you brake on an incline, and they told you it's because something in the exhaust is loose? That doesn't really make sense. I don't trust mechanics at all anymore. My sister's boyfriend was one and he said they lie to people always to get more money out of em, which everyone knows but it's worse then I thought. I'd ask friends if they know a mechanic or go to someone you can trust. To me, that shit makes no sense at all.

It's odd that they would attribute such a sound that occurs when you touch the brake pedal to the exhaust. Definitely try to get a second opinion.

Not saying they're right or wrong, but if it does end up being something in the exhaust that requires replacing it, you might as well upgrade and get an aftermarket one for not much extra. Not necessarily the loud rice rocket ones, but one that looks decent and gives you a little bit more pep. In this day and age, a lot of the aftermarket applications are made to be quieter than previous ones, especially with police giving out as many tickets for exhausts as they do in recent years.

If he really wanted to screw him wouldnt it be easier to tell him that his discs are finished and that they need to be replaced?? As for his proposed solution to the problem I suggest that you find a place where they can cut the pipe and solder on a new piece...depending on the size of the pipe it costs like ~60$$. It could also be a problem with the catalytic converter...you can also solder on a new piece there but that would make your car's exhaust system illegal due to antipollution laws. (chances that they find out are slim if you're not an environmentalist). Go to an exhaust specialist!!

does it kinda of sound like your car is dragging something because what you're describing sounds exactly like what my car was doing and the problem was the break pads.

nope, i had the brake pads checked and they're in perfect condition. Thanks for the ideas so far guys, I'm definitely going to bring it in for a second opinion. I'm not convinced that they've found the problem and I don't want to pay $260 to find out

its a possibility its the exhaust. my car had the same problem but it was during acceleration. the muffler broke off and the pipe was dangling inside the muffler holding it up. so whenever i hit the gas it rubbed and made the squeeling noise. what i dont get tho is the pipe inside the pipe. just let him show you though when he has it on the lift to make sure.

you could just get your exhaust re done (catylitic converters back) at a cheaper price then that. then again i dont know how prices are where you life but id go to an exhaust shop and have it re done, i dont think a single muffler exhaust system wold be that expensive.
