Elton John vows to make hip hop record

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - After 40 years of performing rock music, pop ballads and movie soundtracks, Elton John is looking to cross over to yet another musical genre -- hip hop.

"I want to bring my songs and melodies to hip hop beats -- a bit like 'No Diggity' by Blackstreet,'" John said in excerpts of an interview posted on Rolling Stone's Web site on Friday.

John told the music magazine he would like to work with producer Dr. Dre and a variety of artists, although he had yet to contact them.

"I want to work with Pharrell (Williams), Timbaland, Snoop (Dogg), Kanye (West), Eminem and just see what happens. It may be a disaster, it could be fantastic, but you don't know until you try," he said.

John is one of rock-n-roll's most prolific singer/songwriters and is known for flamboyant costumes and spectacular piano playing. His hits include "Your Song," "Rocket Man" and "Candle in the Wind."

The 59-year-old musician's next album, "The Captain and the Kid" is expected to be released in the fall.

He soared to stardom in the 1970s and has maintained a legendary status, branching into writing songs for movies like "The Lion King" and Broadway plays like "Aida."

But, hip hop?

Actually, John performed the song "Stan" with Eminem on 2001's telecast of the Grammys, the music industry's top awards, and the pair brought the house down.

god help us all.

oh and the title is a joke so lets not turn this into a hip hop is not dead thread. ok. thanks :)

So long as he doesn't even think about rapping, I don't think this is a bad thing. Some piano driven beats penned by Reginald Dwight could be great, he is an amazing song writer and a guru with the piano.

Apparently if he doesn't complete writing a song within half an hour he scraps and starts over.

Most people probably have never listened to Elton john, dude is quite the artist. If he wants to use his style over Rap beats thats cool with me, I like No Diggity so if he is gonna sound like that cool, is a bit weird though.

Yeah, seriously, Elton is a great artist. He's been making millions since before most of us were born, so don't hate on what you don't know about. He's worked with so many people, Mary J. Blige included, so it's not like he's completely new to the hip-hop thing. And I seriously doubt he'll be rapping like some of you fear, he'll probably just be included in the creation process of the instrumental and maybe even doing some hooks or whatever.

haha, but serious... elton isn't gonna b rappin... u lot gotta be crazy to think he is going 2 throw his whole career away to get on the mic and do a verse or 2 with any hip hop artist...

all he's gonna do is what he did with ghetto gospel, throw a hook on a song and thats it... you lot need 2 stop complainin about this...

the guy's known as a legend all over the world and if he's workin with artists in this genre, maybe he can bring back some of the musical element that hip hop has lost with most of its current day artists... whats there 2 lose?

Lol but why the hell did he kick it off talkin about the No Diggity beat, the shit like 10 years old. was he just ridin around and it came on the radio, so he holds press conference with an idea. Well, for instance, the No Diggity by the Blackstreet band" lol

He has an album in the 70's called "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy". The new title may have something to do with that.

As for the hip-hip thing, i think it would be a great idea. His piano over Dre beats would kill anything out right now, even if there were no vocals.
