Technology help with codecs

hey im not exactly computer literate and figured maybe someone here could help me out. im downloading a file that uses xvid, i downloaded the codec itself.......but now im not sure what to do. i installed it, and try to play the file i downloaded in windows media player, but it says it doesnt support it or something.

should i download an entirley new media player? or did i not do something right when downloading the codec? or is it something totally different? thanks in advance

i read somewhere that xvid is an mpeg 4 video compliant codec as specified by ISO. my understanding of xvid is that it is an open source mpeg 4 video codec and you need to isntall the binary to play movies ecoded with xvid.

I think you have to download the proper binary of xvid. what binary did you download and install???

thanks for the help man. uhhh, what binary did i install? to be honest i dont really know. im totally computer illiterate so im not sure what im doing, all i know is that i downloaded the codec, installed it, and now im not quite sure what to do.
im going to go to those links and see if they help

I use 2 codecs and it plays everything I've found.]

DivX 5 and
Xvid
