Haroon Al-Qahtani: Dirty Crossfaders and Cheesy Breaks (A Final Tribute to UBB)
The Ultimate Breaks and Beats (UBB) series was released in the mid-80s by Lenny Roberts (a/k/a Breakbeat Lenny). The records contained hundreds of classic Hip-Hop breaks, many of which were discovered by Hip-Hop's founding fathers. Hip-Hop DJs and producers quickly obtained copies of UBB and scavenged them for sampling material. Indeed, most Hip-Hop releases from the mid-80s until even the early 90s utilized breaks that could be found on UBB.
While breakbeat mixtapes have evolved far beyond UBB, there is no doubt that the series contains many gems that it never hurts to pay homage to. Long before battle records and Serato, DJs had a few volumes of UBB on hand, usually with extensive cue burn. Every old-school DJ has a special relationship with this series, and could take his listeners on a unique voyage, simply depending on how he cut, blended, and spliced the tracks Arguably, there are moments on all of these records that appeal to, and reflect the emotions of a DJ.
Dirty Crossfaders and Cheesy breaks is my homage to UBB. UBB gave me a feel for what it must have been like before Hip-Hop was on wax, and laid the foundations for my interest in crate digging. Enjoy!
