The security guard alleged to have killed rapper Proof has been convicted on two weapons charges related to the incident, by a jury in Detroit.
Mario Etheridge, 28, was found guilty of carrying a concealed weapon and unlawfully firing a gun. He faces up to nine years in prison.
Proof, of rap group D12, died in April after a dispute in a Detroit nightclub.
Authorities say Mr Etheridge shot Proof in lawful defence after the rapper fatally shot his cousin, Keith Bender.
Mr Etheridge's lawyer has said the incident was triggered by a row over a game of pool at the CCC nightclub on Detroit's Eight Mile Road.
Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Mr Etheridge shot twice at the ceiling in an effort to stop Proof, whose real name was Deshaun Holton, before aiming the gun at him.
Those shots were the basis for the charge of illegally firing a weapon inside a building.
"No one can calm a violent situation down by introducing a weapon," said assistant prosecutor Elizabeth Walker, who handled the case. "Today's verdict proves this."
However, Ms Walker told the Detroit Free Press that Mr Etheridge may only be sentenced to probation because he has no criminal record.
Sentencing is scheduled for 17 October.
