Hey-Lo,

I'll be visiting NY, NY soon. I've been to different areas of NY but not this city before. Anyways...what are some of your favorite spots to hit up out there. What would you recommend that I do prior to leaving?

I know what the tourist site says but no one knows the city like the people who live there.

There are quite a few people from NY or the general area on the board, no??

Oh well, just wanted some ideas and opinions! :D

I'm not going to Upstate NY, I should be fine. It's "supposed" to be warm and sunny. Well, warm compared to what it's been. Probably in the 30s which is summertime compared to the weather i've been in with the snow storms and the freezing cold wind...

I don't want to visit a place where lots of people died...but thanks.

I don't know Flipp...I honestly have no idea. How about like museums, art shows/exhibits, etc. Stuff like that. I'm not really too big into the club scene.

Well as far as museums go my favorite by far is the MOMA but there are tons of other great ones. The Museum of Natural History is another one I really enjoy. I would say go hang out in central park for a while but it will be freezing so you really wont want to do that. Another really great museum is The National Museum of the American Indian. That one is a little away from the rest. It is downtown at bowling green. If you want to check out some great comedy I highly suggest going to the upright citizens brigade theatre. most nights you can catch the free show. Most of the actors from the t.v. show are usually there as well as some SNL people. It is all improv and some of the funniest shit I have ever seen.

lol, I just wanted to open the same thread^^

I am going to New York on April (all the way from Germany) :)

I have to get some addresses^^

1. I want to go to all the places of the intro of "King of Queens". the only location I know is "flushing meadows".
2. I want to visit the apartment building of "Friends".

They say it's dangerous to visit harlem or the bronx if you are a tourist?!

Please, give me some info on places I HAVE to see !!!

Don't know about Queens, only time I spent there was going to a Mets game. As for the friends apartment, I believe it's somewhere down in the village can't really help you. Now about the bronx. I lived in the south bronx in a project building for two months, we were running an after school program there and teaching in p.s. 32. I had no problems. Don't let all the bullshit you hear in rap songs and in movies get to you, the bronx is amazing and there is tons to see there. I have been back there atleast 10 times in the past year since living there. The Bronx Zoo is great as well as the botanical gardens. Little Italy in the bronx is much better than the one in Manhattan so go there if you want some great italian food.

technically there is no 'little italy' of the bronx. we just call it arthur ave. but there are definatly some equally great resturants down in the real little italy on mulberry street in manhattan- both are a good bet for some italian food unlike uve ever had. if u want ill tell u the resturants i go to personally. as per the bronx being dangerous, there are actually some really nice neighborhoods in the bronx i.e riverdale. however, everyone in ny thinks of the bronx as the most dangerous boro.... that is if you are a drug dealer or a gang member. if you are just a walking down the street like every1 else there is a very small chance of anything happening. besides, you are latino- youll fit in perfect.

That would be nice!

Btw.: What's the best (cheapest/fastest) way to get from one place to the other? metro? taxi?

Yeah, I'll be heading back to nyc in april as well...what are some good italian places in manhattan. Also, which is the best ray's to get pizza from? I've been to a couple and honestly, the best pizza i had when i visited the east coast was this place i stopped by in south CT...go figure.

New York is far from as dangerous as rap songs would have you believe. However everywhere is dangerous for a tourist who doesn't know where he is. There will always be someone wanting to exploit you.

As for places to go... Ground Zero is a must... Whether you don't want to go to a place people died or not... It is the largest even in Modern History since the Holocaust... And was an amazing experience, it is very overweliming and emotional.

As for drinking, go to the meat packing district. Lots of good places to drink and where the coolest Manhatians go. :)

pasquale's rigoletto in the bronx on arthur ave is my fav, but my favorite in manhatten on mulberry street is sal anthony's spqr. the cheapest way to get around in the city is by subway, but that could get confusing for you if you have no idea where the fuck youre going. cabs are really expensive if youre taking them everywhere, so i dont know what to recommend as far as thats concerned. get a bike and a map or something lol.

I've no problem taking the subway. I'm sure it's similar to the "EL" system in Chicago. However, are there maps to show you where you're at and where you're trying to get to. Every train and every car on the trains in Chicago have little maps that point out your location. Also, what is there really to do in Times Square? I'll be staying at the Affinia Manhattan and I hear it's right there as well as the Empire State Building and Madison Square Garden. What are some other sites in that general area that you know of? How far is Ellis Island from that area?

in times square there are just resturants and stores and shit, nothing really to do. i went on a trip to ellis island in 3rd grade.... thats the last time i was there- so i dunno if recommend it or not lol. hit the club scene hard is all i can say. weather u like hip hop or house new york has some ill clubs, some that go until noon the next day. just make sure you got your x or coke if u plan on staying up that long haha
