George Best in intesive care

Football legend George Best has been re-admitted to intensive care with breathing difficulties.

The 59-year-old has been in hospital for over a month after being taken in with flu-like symptoms on October 1.

Doctors said he was "perfectly stable" and had not suffered a serious relapse.

A spokesman at the Cromwell Hospital in west London said: "He has been readmitted to intensive care.

"It is just for some respiratory management procedures. He is perfectly stable and is talking to his family.

"He just needed help to sort out some breathing problems."

George Best has had his worst night yet in hospital - with one doctor warning to 'prepare for the worst'.

The 59-year-old football legend has been on a life support machine since Friday.

He was taken to intensive care after suffering a severe setback and a lung infection.

Doctors at the Cromwell Hospital in west London were hoping for an improvement after his condition deteriorated yesterday.

But this morning they said Best had suffered a terrible night and was in a very bad way.

Dr Akeel Alisa, one of the medical team, said: "We must be prepared for the worst.

"George has had a very bad night. He's very, very ill. I think we must all prepare ourselves for the worst.

"George is a friend not just a patient. It's been a very emotional day."

After weeks of illness, Best's health deteriorated significantly on Friday.

He was admitted to hospital on October 1 with flu-like symptoms and earlier this month suffered a kidney infection.

Manchester United legend George Best has died aged 59, his doctor at the Cromwell hospital, west London has confirmed.

Best, who has had an alcohol problem for much of his adult life and received a liver transplant in 2002, had been in hospital since the beginning of October. He was put on a life support machine last week after he picked up a lung infection.

Williams said his patient had known he should not have continued to drink after the transplant and had been very "apologetic" about failing to give up alcohol.

Overnight several floral tributes were placed outside the Cromwell Hospital in London, along with a Manchester United shirt.

Most of Friday's newspapers led with tributes to the player who, at the height of his fame in the 1960s, was dubbed the "fifth Beatle".

The former Northern Ireland international is regarded by many as the greatest player ever to come from the British Isles. He had a dazzling career at Manchester United and was named European Footballer of the Year in 1968.

With his good looks, agility on the pitch and an engaging personality, he was adored by millions in the 1960s and held in great affection in subsequent decades despite his descent into alcoholism, allegations of violence and a tortured personal life.

He once quipped: "I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."

Best's death came hours after doctors treating him said he had multiple organ failure and was not expected to last the day.

Dr Akeel Alisa told reporters outside the private Cromwell Hospital: "It is just a case of waiting now and making him comfortable.

"I would like him to survive another day but it is not likely.

"The family have been here throughout the night, they have been very brave."
