Gas/oil additives?

Just wondering, do all those additives you see at Walmart and Auto shops really make a difference? Like STP products that you add to a full tank of gasoline that claims to clean carberators, increase gas mileage, etc.? Or the engine oil additives that claim to "reduce wear and tear"? Anyone have any knowledge of these? Are they worth buying?

These products are for cars that are on there last legs really,you wouldnt catch me using any of std stuff in my Mini ERa ,but as for a bottle of stuff cleaning a carb,its not gonna do a good job because carb cleaning should be done by hand and these products are just a poor mans answer to a problem,as for increase gas mileage, etc.what they are probably saying is because to carb is clean, fuel is more efficient and build up being reduced means reduced wear and tear. dont put crap like this into your car fatal not a good idea

I'm losin a bit of hp in my car which is why I asked. Yea, my friend basically said the same thing you said, i just wanted to get another opinion from yall. Plus everytime i walk thru a store i always see all that stuff on sale and always wondered if they really do anything.

Nah, like Billy said, it usually doesn't work very well. Not worth it. If you're really worried about your motor, have it checked up upon.

And on the losing hp, well, how do you know? Is it powerful enough to actually notice a lack in power? Or did a slow car just get a whole lot slower? Or are you guessing?

You use something, it's gonna wear out eventually. All cars are going to lose phut in their lifespan. Unless yours suddenly saw it's power chopped in half or something. In that case check it out.

Well to tell the truth once my mate who sells cars had a piece of shit Ford Escort that was smokey as fuck,he put one of two bottles of that STD clean into the rusting bag of shit and its sort of made it better,i remember saying fuck me that made that a bit better then my mate said yeah for about 10 mile but that will do,by then its up the road sold lol so as for these sort of products doing much they DO for a little while but they just mask a problem with papness lol

my camaro used to give me problems, i was losing hp and the engine was doing a few other weird things. i had a mechanic tell me i should use octane booster about every other fill up to try and clean out some build up. it actually worked. i got back some hp and it was running smoother. but my camaro had like 140,000 miles on it at this time

What the point really is, is that those products are meant to be used on a happy engine. It makes an engine a bit cleaner and happier. It's not a magic trick to fix the engine if something more fundamental is wrong.
