Vietnamese police want to talk to disgraced pop star Gary Glitter about reports of him taking young girls to his rented villa.

Neighbours in the southern resort of Vung Tau told a national newspaper they had seen him with several girls aged 15 or under.

The paper said that residents had also complained about his singing.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman said police wanted to question the 61-year-old about the claims.

"If we have evidence of child sexual violation, very strict legal measures would be applied," he said, adding that Glitter had since disappeared.

Glitter, real name Paul Francis Gadd, was sentenced to four months in jail in Britain in 1999 after being found guilty of storing child pornography on his computer.

After his release, he left Britain for Cuba. He then turned up in Cambodia, although he eventually had to leave after pressure from child rights activists.

He has reportedly been in Vietnam for around a year.

Glitter has been quoted as saying: "I'm not doing anything wrong. I'm not hurting anyone. I'm living a quiet life here.

"If people find out I'm here I'll move on to another country. I'll just keep moving until no one can find me."

^ i just heard he is facing the death penelty

Two Vietnamese girls, one aged 12, have claimed they had sex with former British rocker Gary Glitter.

The disgraced star is in police custody after being detained at Ho Chi Minh City airport following allegations he had abused a minor.

Glitter, 61, had reportedly absconded from his beachside home with a 14-year-old girl, who described him as her husband.

The singer, real name Paul Francis Gadd, was handed over to police in the southern resort of Vung Tau.

According to newspaper reports, two girls - one 12, the other 18 - told officers he had paid them for sex.

The youngest said she had sex with him on three occasions and received 150,000 dong (£7) each time.

Having sex with a minor in Vietnam carries a range of penalties including death by firing squad for rape.

Glitter was convicted in Britain in 1999 of possessing child pornography and served half of a four-month sentence before being released.

In 2002 he was expelled from Cambodia for reportedly trawling for underage sex.

He has reportedly been living with two girls in a £750-a-month house in Vung Tau formerly owned by a police chief.

Disgraced rocker Gary Glitter is facing four months in custody while Vietnamese police investigate underage sex claims.

Officials said Glitter will be detained pending further inquiries.

The singer was arrested on Saturday at Ho Chi Minh City airport as he tried to leave Vietnam for Thailand.

His lawyer Le Thanh Kinh has insisted there is no evidence to prove Glitter had sex with a 12-year-old girl.

Prosecutors suspect he also had sex with a second girl - although there is uncertainty about her age.

Glitter, 61, whose real name is Paul Gadd, denies the allegations but is being held in prison near the seaside resort of Vung Tau.

The age of consent in Vietnam is 18 and sexual intercourse with a minor - even with their consent - is considered rape.

If tried and convicted, he could be sentenced to death by firing squad.

Gary Glitter has been charged with committing obscene acts with children in Vietnam.

A prosecutor said the 61-year-old former glam rock star could face more serious charges that carry the death penalty.

Nguyen Van Sinh said Glitter, who is accused of having sex with a 12-year-old girl, could later be charged with child rape.

"We have done medical checks on the girl. If we find enough evidence, we will change the charge to child rape," he said.

If convicted of that charge, the disgraced 1970s rocker could face the death penalty by firing squad, according to Vietnamese law.

Pending further inquiries, Glitter will remain in detention in a Vietnamese jail for four months.

Glitter's lawyer seemed resigned to his possible conviction on the lesser charge.

"If the prosecutors have enough evidence, we can accept article 116 of the penal code on obscene acts with children," said Le Thanh Kinh.

"If they want to charge my client with child rape, they must come up with more evidence, including results of medical tests."

Mr Kinh said he would continue to seek bail for his client.

Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was arrested on Saturday at Ho Chi Minh City airport as he tried to leave Vietnam for Thailand.
