What has Stewie Griffin wrought? How about a Bender rebirth?

Following the hugely successful resurrection of Family Guy, Fox execs are reportedly in talks to bring Futurama back from the dead.

The studio has begun talks to revive the Emmy-winning animated series and produce a limited number of new episodes, thanks to a resurgence in the show's popularity on DVD and in reruns, Variety reports.

Reps for 20th Century Fox have declined to comment on the news, but Variety says initial negotiations have begun.

If revived, it's unclear exactly which network would air the new episodes. While Fox housed the original series, the show found new life once reruns began showing on the Cartoon Network. Comedy Central subsequently snapped up the off-air rights and will exclusively air the repeats beginning in 2008.

The brainchild of Simpsons mastermind Matt Groening and writer David X. Cohen, Futurama debuted on Fox in March 1999. The series revolved around Fry, a pizza delivery boy, who is accidentally frozen for a thousand years. He wakes up in the year 3000 and befriends sassy one-eyed pilot Leela and cranky robot Bender, who both work for an intergalactic delivery service run by a distant nephew of Fry's.

After five seasons and three Emmys, including the 2002 prize for Best Animated Series, Futurama was shuttered in August 2003.

Should the show make its way back to the airwaves, it would follow in the footsteps of another Fox cult 'toon, Family Guy.

The latter show was brought back in 2004, thanks to robust rerun ratings and staggeringly high DVD sales--the show ranks as the fourth-biggest TV-series seller ever. Since its comeback, Fox has produced two more seasons and the direct-to-DVD movie Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story.

For Futurama to return, the studio would need to re-sign the show's production team, as well as voice stars Billy West,
Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio.

In the meantime, Futurama lives on in comic-book form, with all-new stories continuing to be released by Groening's Bongo Comics.
Man I hope they bring it back, Futurama is the best cartoon imo, much smarter comedy than others.

I agree about Futurama being the best. But I dont see it happening. One of the Futurama geeks at work told me that the reason the show was cancelled was that Fox was made at Groening for all of the Fox in jokes and insults he loves doing, they asked him to tone it down and he pretty much told them to go fuck themselves, and that began all the trouble.

I heard he wanted to make a movie based on the show though.

If you like the show, I just bought the game for Xbox really cheap, its on PS2 as well, funny as fuck, 30 mins of footage between levels, its like its own episode. Mom buys the business and with that she owns 51% of the planet and takes over hehe.

I been watching Futurama in the morning for the past week or so, as it's been showing on Ch4 in a morning (uk). I have grown to like it, for I thought it a bit wierd at first (characters with one eye an stuff). Bender is great, esp the episode where he gets broken, gets up on stage singing for other broken robots, then starts dancing around  . Comedy.

great show, no question about that, but IMO 4th best tv show, Family Guy #1, South Park #2, Trailer Park Boys #3, then Futurama

but ruk, groening was able to get like 4 (i think) more seasons of simpsons on fox, y wudnt he be able to pull off sum furturama seasons, cuz simpsons makes way more fox insults then futurama ever did.

What I liked about Futurama was that ANYTHING could happen in that show. They had a whole universe to explore and make stories about unlike shows like Simpsons or Family Guy where they are in one town with the same characters.

Simpsons makes a lot more money for him and he didnt want to quit it. Plus Fox doesnt really want to fuck with the Simpsons because they make so much cash for them, but Futurama didnt so they felt they could fuck with it.

The series isn't going to return just yet. They are in talks for a straight to DVD movie - if sales are high, then the series will (hopefully) come back.

-sorry that was what they originally planned, looks now that they are in talks for both the dvd movie and the show

Cartoon Network shows Futurama and Family Guy back to back every night. Tightest shit ever
But that is good news, some new episodes would be nice.

Imagine if new episodes of Family Guy and Futurama were back to back. As far as humor, Family Guy is better, but Futurama has better stories and it's the better show overall.

I remember "Roswell That End's Well" and "Godfellas" were both real good episodes, and "The Luck of The Fryish" is my favorite episode ever.
