Jailed rapper Foxy Brown, who was recently released from solitary confinement , yesterday (November 28) spoke about her experiences in prison and the affect it has had on her.
The rapper is currently serving a one year sentence in Rikers Island for violating probation that stemmed from a 2004 fight with two manicurists in a New York City nail salon.
Last month, Foxy was thrown into solitary by The Department of Corrections for 76 days after committing three violations including getting into a shoving match with another female inmate and refusing to take a random drug test.
The rapper was released from solitary confinement this week on good behavior after serving 40 days.
“It’s been very hard, but I believe God uses circumstances to develop your character,” Foxy told Metro New York on Wednesday. “ I know coming out of this I’m going to be a much stronger person.”
In solitary, Foxy was confined to a cell by herself for 23 hours a day and was only allowed to see visitors or go to the library or exercise in a recreation area away from general-population inmates, for an hour each day.
The rapper said spending the holiday season away from her family has been hard on her.
“I probably cried the entire Thanksgiving,” she revealed. “I spoke to my entire family, but I was boo-hooing like a baby. We were served what would be considered sweet potatoes, collared greens and turkey, but it wasn’t anything like my mother’s cooking. I was really, really depressed all day.”
Foxy divulged that she hopes to be a spokesperson for the National Association of the Deaf when she is released. The rapper suddenly went deaf in 2005 but claims her hearing has improved significantly.
The rapper also claimed that her days for making headlines for the wrong reason are over.
“I’m much smarter now,” Foxy said. “ I know how to dodge and weave.
Foxy recently launched her website which will allow fans to contact her and hear material from her new album, Brooklyn's Don Diva, which hits stores on February 5th 2008.
