HOUSTON (Reuters) - Commander Eileen Collins said astronauts on shuttle Discovery had seen widespread environmental destruction on Earth and warned on Thursday that greater care was needed to protect natural resources.

Her comments came as NASA pondered whether to send astronauts out on an extra spacewalk to repair additional heat-protection damage on the first shuttle mission since the 2003 Columbia disaster.

Discovery is linked with the International Space Station and orbiting 220 miles above the Earth.

"Sometimes you can see how there is erosion, and you can see how there is deforestation. It's very widespread in some parts of the world," Collins said in a conversation from space with Japanese officials in Tokyo, including Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

"We would like to see, from the astronauts' point of view, people take good care of the Earth and replace the resources that have been used," said Collins, who was standing with Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi in front of a Japanese flag and holding a colorful fan.

Collins, flying her fourth shuttle mission, said the view from space made clear that Earth's atmosphere must be protected, too.

Yup, the way we're all going we're doomed.
We do things without even thinking about it, and when all of us think 'one more person doesn't matter' we see that we're all that one more person together. THings need to change but it's already late. We just need to mitigate the damage that we're going to face. Yes true everything that has happened in the past 100 years is evoloution, but we need to evolve out of this to more earth friendly mannersims.

Reason it's not happening is because people are stopping it from happening, electric cars, hydrogen fueld engines and the like have been around for years but never manufactured for the mass because many people will lose money. If we want to have a safe future and if we want our kids to actually live a healthy life we need to act as soon as possible. We've taken so much.

(call me a tree hugger if you will, but you know all that i'm saying is true)

Doesn't matter. It's getting destroyed faster than we're protecting/rebuilding it.
The only way we're going to save the earth is by dying out or leaving.

Maybe that is what's supposed to happen. Nothing is intended to last forever...

You know what would be hilarious? If we get all this work done and make the Earth a great place to live (for the first time in the Earth's life) and a meteor hits us and blows us to bits !! :D

^^^haha yeah aint that the truth
we're all fuked and theres nuttin we can do about it
