Unfortunately it's a fact that most americans are really uneducated, especially compared to people who graduated in Europe for example, that's why the most intelligent people living in America are usually from europe with addition of educated Asians, Australians etc (I've heard most Americans don't even know how to spell "etc" btw)
I know there are some good universities in the states but they won't educate the whole nation. That's why most Americans lack a lot of major knowledge in many fields of general knowledge, especially geography, history, foreign languages, maths, science and probably at everything except sports. I think that lack of proper education makes Americans primitive, spoilt, much too self-confident and ignorant. Of course I'm not talking about every American, I mean most.
There is a bit truth in each stereotype, that is Americans are seen as fat, stupid people. I know there are many intelligent people on this board, many of them live in America but it requires some intelligence to frequently post on message boards without being banned, it's natural selection I guess.
Sadly I also encountered lack of intelligence or ingorance here.
But anyway the point is - average person in any average country in Europe knows basics of 2-3 languages, knows most historical events (I mean world history of course), could name any big city in the world and show it on the map, knows basics of higher maths or science and has a knowledge allowing him/her to clearly see things as they are, without any egocentrism or ignorance. Of course there are also stupid people here like everywhere but really it's minority. Of course there are assholes and bitches here but they are not that dumb, it's about mentality which is a different thing.
For example, I live in Poland, we are one of the biggest partners of America, we help them in Iraq (about 15% of soldiers there are Polish), we house American anti-missile defense systems, we've got a huge military contract with America, we also helped them in most recent military operations..and? Most Americans don't even know where or what actually Poland is, not even mentioning word Pole.
Americans still claim they were helpful in world war II, yeah they were, selling weapons for both sides and then testing their nukes for "free", most thing they won vietnam war and probably will think they were successful in Iraq.
I know the video posted in this thread isn't too serious, it just shows how incredibly stupid people may be, tho I haven't ever met somebody that stupid.
American high schools and that whole system is a big mistake.
People go to college and then EVENTUALLY start learning basics of world history or geography.
For example I'm finishing high school this year - I think I know about 95% of known claimed historical events and could easily desribe all, know a lot about most countries, cities and some towns in the world, know my own language, fluently speak English (I know I still make mistakes), know basics of German, French and Latin without even mentioning Czech, Slovakian, Slovenian and other similar slavic languages. I could diagnose most known diseases by sympoms, know all bones and muscles in human body, I feel well educated in psychology and humanities, tho I'm not that good in maths I still know a lot advanced mathematic, I know real values in life, I'm not egocentric or ignorant (ok sometimes in jokes), I'm sporty (played football in professional club for few years, practiced Taekwondo, Jiu-Jitsu and Aikido), I could tell something intelligent about most known figures dead or alive, I know about organisations, groups, world laws, world politics, military, self-defence, first aid, computer science, digital technologies, science, philosophy, religions, chemistry and other things I can't remember now. And guess what? Most of those things I've learned at school - elementary school and high school. I haven't even mentioned any personal interests as they're not related to this subject.
I'm not any special - my grades are mostly "C"'s "D"s with one "E" and few "B"s, last year I had "A" in English because our teacher was British (I mean he's from Britain).
I think many many people at my age here have similar or bigger knowledge than I do, also I feel that with each information I gain I get dumber. I remember when I was a kid, I felt like I know everything - I think that's how most mature uneducated people still feel. Poland is on 3rd or 4th place where most intelligent people live, our education is probably one of best systems in the world but still when you go to America you're treatened like a dumb fuck. They ask stupid questions like you came from a jungle or something - again lack of education. You've got Polish scientists in America, Polish doctors, Polish generals as well as Japanese, Australian or any other educated foreigners and they are the ones that make America be one of the greatest countries in the world.
Some people are so stupid that they're mad, there are racists, nationalists arguing that immigrants take their jobs, live in great mansions or drive nice cars - yeah because they're usually in fact better. Excluding Mexicans or immigrants from south america there's a tiny chance that nobody-loser would move there. Best specialists move to America for better money, better life - and they get it because of other people who got there before.
Sorry for my long ass post but I've felt a strong need to write that. Maybe people will think about it, maybe others will diss what I wrote but that's how it is - a fact.
If you think you're good think for a moment what makes you think that way? Is it because you've got money, nice house, friends? Usually intelligent people = sad people, I'm sure many people will agree. The more you know, the more you realise you are stupid, other people are even more stupid, the world sucks, there is no justice, your friends are stupid, your intelligence is not appreciated, most probably you won't be a boss because intelligence = self respect and deeper values, more intelligent people don't want to know you because they think you're stupid too. Unfortunately there are not too many people who could honestly say: "I am stupid". Usually people would laugh at somebody who says something like that, they would claim they're cool, great and smart, even if they don't know how many cms one meter has, what's islam, where does Laos lay or what happened in 1776
