Doses of Happiness

Chronic said:
I watched a TV program about kids being teased at school so I'll use that example. Are you telling me that a kid that gets beat up at school every day only has to fear what fear is keeping him from doing?

Besides that I can give you 1000000000000000000000000000000000000 examples of people who actually have something to fear.

Honestly the statement "the only thing you have to fear is fear itself" might sound inspiring and all that but it's a load of bullshit.

Okay, you're walking outside late at night all alone. After a while you notice a guy following you. He catches up to you, grabs you and starts tearing off your clothes and tells you if you struggle, he'll slit your throat. Nothing to fear right? Right.

The quotes are in reference to confidence building and are ideas about creating personal strength and happiness.

If you read the fear one in reference to that, the message is: do not hold yourself back due to fears that may only exist in your mind. It is not a reference to rational dangers that exist outside your mind, in the real world, such as rapists.

For example, use the example of being affraid of having trust in another, you won't find happiness or love if you keep pushing people out of your life, out of fear of being hurt. That is the message - fear that exists in our minds holds us back from achieving and experiencing great things.

VALUE

High heels or running shoes?

For me, the choice is easy, of course. But for the ladies, this is a
good question. One is not better than the other. Running shoes won't do when her majesty invites you to tea. On the other hand, have you ever tried to shoot a few hoops in lavender pumps?

It's the same with people. We need electricians, and we need CEOs.
We need doctors, and we need quality inspectors. We need parents,
and we need taxi drivers.

Whomever you meet, remember he/she has value.

Sara, what program did u send the happiness quotes with?? i tried to open them with Mircrosoft Works but it wouldnt open :(

I went through it very quickly so I misunderstood it. Sorry fpr the mix up.

PREDICTABILITY

As you drive down the road, do you ever think what would happen if
the car in the other lane would meander across the yellow line into
your path? Not often, I suppose. Except for alcohol, fatigue,
sneezing or shaving one's legs while driving, the other driver will
keep his lane.

And yet, there is nothing to keep him there … nothing but a social
convention that says: you keep your lane, I keep mine, and we both
live to drive another day.

Do you recognize this principle? Do unto others as you would have
done onto you. Do you apply this life-saver to everything you do?

COMMUNICATION

Crossing the bridge from Cornwall in Canada to Massena in the
U.S.A. is a good excuse to buy extra life insurance. Yikes!
Somebody get a shovel and repair that thing!

Not the ideal way to ensure good communications between friendly
neighbours.

What kind of bridges do you build to neighbors at home or at work?
Is it time to get out the shovel?

This is one of my faves

HOPE

There is always hope.

Good things happen and bad things happen. Even when things look
darkest, good things are still to happen; there is hope.

What is hope? It is the certain knowledge that sooner or later one
of those good things will happen. It is the deep understanding that
bad things do not go on forever.

Remember Adolph Hitler?
Remember the Berlin Wall?
Remember Saddam Hussein?

There is always hope.

REFLECTIONS

Everybody's a mirror.

When you smile at people, they smile back.

When you frown at people, they frown back.

When you shout at people, they shout back.

Take a look at yourself in the mirror today.

RESPECT

Roll out the red carpet today.

Roll it out for yourself, because you deserve to be treated with
respect and care. Yes, even when you are feeling guilty about
something, you remain worth the treatment.

Roll it out for others, because they deserve to be treated with
respect and care. Yes, even that irritably selfish, nosy person you
would rather sneer at.

It's the same red carpet. You can't roll one out for yourself and not
for those around you. And if you roll it up for those around you, you
have rolled it up for yourself, too.

What are you waiting for? Start rolling.

DREAMS

Is there a song in your heart?

Is there a book in you somewhere?

Do you tap your toes all the time?

Let loose today. Sing. Write. Dance. Follow your heart.

OPTIMISM

Question: Name three things that are blue.

Answer:

1. the sky
2. the ocean
3. a pessimist

Pessimists see the sad, lonely, hopeless side of life. They can't help
but feel blue.

Expect good things. The sky is blue. The ocean is blue. You don't
have to be.

REPUTATION

Whooping cranes don't really whoop it up all night.

Yaks are not really all that talkative.

And bald eagles have feathers all over their heads.

People are also tagged with nicknames, reputations and images that
might not fit who they really are. Maybe this has happened to you.

Don't judge a book by its cover or by its name. Everybody has good
inside. Make sure you remain open to that.

CHANGE

Our days are a kaleidoscope. Every instant a change takes
place.... New harmonies, new contrasts, new combinations of every
sort....The most familiar people stand each moment in some new
relation to each other, to their work, to surrounding objects.

We should enjoy the small changes around us, the ones we often don't even notice. Take a look through your kaleidoscope this day.

INTEGRITY

Our society is built on codes of conduct, rules, laws and social
norms. But at the base of that are simple values. That we need
rules and laws to stick to those values is a sad commentary on our
ability to live with integrity.

Integrity means living the values we claim to hold dear.

Integrity is neither as simple nor as easy as it sounds. But if you
live with integrity, you will find that you don't need to focus codes
of conduct and rules - your own values will guide your way.

Take some time to bring your values to the fore today.

IMAGE

Remember how New York used to be a crime-ridden place where
people feared to go out at night? Then, a few years ago, the
authorities cracked down on crime.

But what was amazing was the kind of crime they cracked down on:
vandalism and littering. The result was greatly reduced violence.
Why?

Because a neglected environment of garbage on the ground and
broken windows sends a message that nobody is in charge and
nothing matters. In a clean, well-maintained atmosphere, there is a
sense of order, an underlying message that things matter.

When you look in the mirror, what do you see. Do you see a
neglected person who doesn't matter? Or do you see a well
maintained person who matters very much.

How you treat yourself and how others treat you hangs in the
balance.

DENIAL

Most of us walk around in denial much of our lives. There are things
we know we should do, but we are too lazy. Or they would require
us getting out of our comfort zone. Or they might commit us to do
more than we want to do. Or we are not sure if we will still be the same person afterwards.

Life is about changes and about taking risks - not about taking
stupid risks like jumping off a cliff, but about taking personal risks
that might change our character: learning a new career, kicking a
bad habit, moving to a new town. But most of the time, we avoid
those harmless risks.

What are you avoiding today.

RELATIONSHIPS

Don't you love a good campfire? I do. Or the warm glow of a fire
place?

Sooner or later, that fire will burn out if you don't feed it.

So will a relationship, whether it is with a spouse, a child, a parent, a
friend, or just with yourself. Don't let the fire burn out.

HAPPINESS

True happiness is when you don't have any choice but to smile.

The roof is leaky. What can you do about it? You can call a repair
service.

And you can smile.

The children are screeching. What can you do about it? You can
remind them about their "indoor voices".

And you can smile.

You have a flu. What can you do about it? You can take plenty of
liquids.

And you can smile.

Amazingly, nobody ever felt worse by smiling, inside or out. When
you just can't help but smile, you have found happiness.

LISTEN

Listen.

What do you here?

OK, so turn off the refrigerator if you have to. Now listen again.
What do you hear?

Nothing? Not so. That is the sound of silence. Silence is where
you get to be alone with yourself. Now listen closely. What is
yourself telling you? What challenge is yourself raising. What truth
is yourself demanding be recognized.

If you haven't taken a few moments to listen to yourself today, do
so now. It is the only way to know who you are.

FITNESS

We all know the story about the tortoise and the hare. The were
racing. The hare, in conceit, stopped running to take a nap. The
plodding tortoise passed the hare by and reached the finish line first. Yay for the tortoise. What a hero. He must be happier than the hare.

Well, not quite. The hare got his metabolic rate pumping. He had
some great exercise. Then he took a nap, so he was well-rested.

Sure, the tortoise became the media darling, but you can't believe
everything you read in the paper, can you?

RESPONSIBILITY

Do you take responsibility for your actions and their results?

Responsibility is not the same as blame? When we ask, "Who's
responsible for this?" We should not be asking who is to blame. We
should be asking who is able to respond.

Response + ability = responsibility.

There is no loss of face when taking responsibility for one's actions.
There is a loss of face, to others and to ourselves, when we fail to
take responsibility.

Of the hundreds of abilities you have, responsibility is one of the
most important.
