I've had more formal education than them but like carmi, I think life experience is a kind of intelligence that counts for a lot. They have more general knowledge whereas I think I have a more specific kind of knowledge. So whilst they teach me a lot, I think there are lots of things I teach them.

But you also have life experineces that they might not have had.....I mean shoot going to DisneyLand (which they did not and I have) is a life experience.

As for the thread, there are things that I know that my parents don't and there are certain things that my parents are narrow-minded about and I'm not, but there is no way that I could think that I'm smarter than them.

Wisdom and intelligence are 2 separate entities. With that said, if you learn everything you can from your parents, you should turn out better off in the long run since you'll be able to add whatever you learn on your own to what you've learned from them. Each generation should in theory be more successful than the one before although there's are still many who stray from the family tree.

I'm not smarter than my mom. Yeah, I have skills/knowledge that my mom doesn't and vice versa but she's 50 years old. She's been here twice as much as me, she's got way more knowledge about life than I do. Even little things like cooking or cleaning... she just knows things that I don't. When I think about it, a lot of things I know are things she taught me. You are appreciated...

The questions has't got anything to do with wisdom and asking them for their advice. Advice would be their opinion, not neccesarily making it more superior to your own adivce.

But imagine you were given a task which neither of you had ever undertaken,who do you think would be more competent? Their are variables involved in this, such as what type of task is it etc.

Smarter? In what sense? I have a higher IQ than my parents do (only slightly higher than my dad's). My parents have a higher education than I do, which makes them more knowledgeable in those specific areas and yes, they do have more life experience but life experience does not make you smarter. That would be like saying an older person is smarter than a younger one simply because of the age difference. I don't think I'm smarter than either of my parents, they have a lot to teach me, just as I have a lot to teach them.

i expected people saying "they have more experience" - of course they have. but experience doesnt necessarily make you smart.

personally i would say i am smarter when it comes to logic thinking, for example. and i would also say im smarter when it comes to social intelligence, just to name two.

in the end its definitely a tough question to answer but if i had to decide between a simple yes and no...i would pick the "yes" option.

That's what I said! People did take the 'more experience' route, even though there wasn't a restriction contained within the original post, but nonetheless it was a silly direction to go off into, therefore, by implication, they weren't supposed to go into that direction.
