DMX is currently facing a variety of traffic charges such as aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, speeding fines as well as seat-belt and unsafe lane change violations following his arrest on June 2nd. As previously reported, he did not attend the hearings to face the charges which resulted in a warrant being issued for his arrest.
DMX, real name Earl Simmons, finally faced the music on Monday but rejected the plea bargain offered to him. "I don't feel good about this at all, it's not fair. $25,000 for traffic tickets? Come on. Let's keep it real,'' he said.
The steep fee was set by City Court Judge Barbara Leak as a penalty for the charges as well as bail - undoubtedly set so high after he missed the previous court dates.
According to Murray Richman, the lawyer representing DMX, he also refused a plea deal from the District Attorney. The case will resume August 25th, but Judge Leak is hopeful that negotiations will prevent it from going to trial.
If convicted, DMX faces up to 180 days imprisonment.
On August 29th the rapper is also due to face a separate charge of driving on the shoulder of the Hutchinson River Parkway. He has already pleaded not guilty to this charge.
