The Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies are the oldest student organization at UNC-Chapel Hill, established in 1795. It is a debate and literary organization aimed at encouraging the free flow of ideas and promoting parliamentary discussion. Some famous alumni include governors, federal officials, poet Thomas Wolfe, and the eleventh President of the United States, James K. Polk.
Anyway, enough tooting of my own horn. I was elected to the office of Critic for the Fall. My job requirements are essentially to critique the speeches and arguments of the debates (they elected me to be cynical; perfect job for me, right?) and to create the debate schedule for the semester.
Well, I've already created the schedule, with the help of my committee of course, and it's received a lot of poisitive feedback. Because of this, I figured I could use them to make WOW a little more active, to hopefully incite some verbal intercourse, if you will. So, each week I'll be posting the upcoming debate for the next week.
The debates are not always political. There's some philosophy, a relationship debate, and of course a sports debate, among others. I'll post them all in here though for the sake of referencing.
The first debate is not until two weeks from Monday, but I will post up one of the better debates that did not make the cut in order to keep some interest.
So, in other words, stay tuned.
