Gang Related - Released: October 7, 1997
The loss of Dr. Dre and Tupac was a major blow to Death Row Records. The relationship between the Row and their parent company, Interscope Records, was continually strained until they finally parted ways in August of 1997. But within two months, the Row signed with Priority and released a double-CD soundtrack to Tupac's final movie, Gang Related. Tuppac appeared on four tracks, including the single "Made N*****" wich he had hoped to make into a mini-movie. The music video dramatized a scene from his shooting in 1994, when a bloody, shot-up Tupac jumped in the elevator of Quad Studios and faced a surprised and bewildered Puffy and BIG upstairs. The rest of the video features Pac and the Outlawz chasing them down with guns.
Death Row reached out to other west coast artists for this project, and included songs from Ice Cube, Mack 10 and WC. Snoop, Nate Dogg and The Dogg Pound contributed six songs, while a new crop of artists held down the remaining. What would be DR's last soundtrack proved to be a comeback for the Row at the time. It went gold in two weeks and went on to sell over 6 million copies, ultimately earning more income than Gang Related's box office sales.
