Love it? Hate it? Interesting? Garbage? What do you think?

Personally this ranks as one of my favourite movies of all time, even if it has the disadvantage of being in subtitles.

It's in pretty amazing.

And I don't necessarily think subtitles are a drawback. It would've been a hell of a lot worse if it had been dubbed over, no?

I usually don't mind subtitles but this is one of those movies where I wish it was originally in English. It's just a minor irritant to a great movie however.

i saw it for the first time a last week. i was amazed. i think its a great story and all around one of my favorite movies. i loved the end when they were showing the credits, and they would show a pic of the actor, show the actors names, the name of the character they played, then they showed the pic of the real person. and the real video of handsome ned in the hospital getting interviewed by the news station was cool too. they got that scene in the movie almost down perfect.

does shit like that still go on down there?

He may have been handsome compared to L'il Ze but his name is Knockout Ned ;)

Good film. Haven't watched it in a while. But some of the acting is superb. When that little kid gets shot in the foot, I believed it. He seemed so real.

Yeah. That's a pretty disturbing scene.

It was only released in 2002. It's set in the 60's/70's.

I loved this movie, def. one of my favorites ever. The way Lil Ze had no remorse in killing just made the story even more stunning. Did anyone else see the resemblance between Lil Ze and Beenie Man?

Actually it's Mané Galinha. :p
BTW, to the guy who asked if shit still goes down there:
Well, it gets worse after each year, especially with the growing power of each faction across the favelas(There is even a joke about that at the end of the movie, but you guys probably wouldn't get it).

This movie wouldn't be half of what it is if it wasn't for being in portuguese.
It wasn't a movie made primary for international viewing, it was just a community project with the people from the hills.

Glad you like a piece of my country's culture. :)

Yeah. My mum refused to watch it because it was in subtitles. I said she was a philistine, but she just agreed. In the end she watched it, she admitted she loved the film and that the subtitles only helped improve the film.
