Google’s Chrome is now the most popular Web browser worldwide, surpassing Microsoft’s Internet Explorer for the first time, according to the latest figures from StatCounter. After years of slowly chipping away Internet Explorer’s market share, Chrome took the lead with 32.76 percent share, while IE dipped to 31.94 percent.
Just a year ago, Internet Explorer was leading the Web browser market share with 43 percent, followed by Mozilla Firefox with 29 percent, and Chrome was third with 19 percent. Twelve months later, IE has lost 12 percent of the browser market share while Chrome gained 13 percent to the detriment of IE and Firefox, which also lost about 4 percent of its users and now comes in at just over 25 percent.
This is not the first time Chrome has leapfrogged Internet Explorer. For a single day in March, Chrome was estimated to have held a few percentage decimals over IE. This time however, Chrome overtook IE for the entire week, though by still less than a percentage point.
While Chrome is leading the browser market worldwide, in the U.S. it still has a lot of catching up to do. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer still has a wide lead at home with 37 percent, with Chrome a distant second at 23 percent, closely followed by Mozilla Firefox 22 percent.
StatCounter figures are generally reliable, as they are based on data collected from some 15 billion page views around the world. However, these stats can wildly differ from one provider to another, as for example NetMarketShare shows Internet Explorer had 54 percent share this month, while Chrome has 19 percent, and Firefox has 20 percent.

I stick with Opera and like it the most. I use Chrome as a back-up browser but I couldn't sacrifice so many cool Opera solutions to switch to Chrome entirely.

Chrome is the best. It's extensions are unbeatable. The new sync with Android is a killer feature.

Chrome is exactly what a web browser should be. the only problem sometimes is that the extensions consume a lot of CPU usage and slow the computer down at times. also, the flash plugin can slow the browser and computer down if there are two plugins conflicting. Chrome has it's own built in flash, so disabling the manual adobe install solves that problem.

on the whole, i think that chrome is an unbeatable all-rounder.

I think that Opera is a better all-rounder. It might not have as many extensions but it has more user-friendly solutions built in. The keyboard shortcuts are somewhat more intuitive, the tabs and tab "trash can", etc. I had hard time setting up everything in Chrome for my mom to make it as user-friendly as Opera is and had to install a lot of extensions, and couldn't make it as neat. Chrome works better with all Google tools though, and is better optimized for some websites so it might be slightly faster overall. But I think Opera is a better all-rounder, but it's about what you need too. Apparently most people can live with no neatly working shortcuts, like ctrl+z to bring back the last tab closed by accident, a nice download manager, a cool rss viewer, mouse gestures, etc. - because most other things - Chrome has copied from Opera. Actually it's pretty funny how most of the coolest browser tech came initially from Opera (tabs, start screen/speed dial, integrated plug-ins and many more), yet only like 3% or so people use that browser. I think that Opera is extremely underrated, because it's great with everything but doesn't excel in one area and isn't backed by a huge tech company.

/\ I have extensions for all those things you mentioned. And much more besides. Got about 20 extensions that I couldn't live without.

Yeah I have a lot of extensions in my Chrome installed too, to make the experience similar to my Opera experience. I just feel like with Opera I need absolutely no extensions - I think it's a more complete package out of the box, without sacrificing resource usage. So I only have one extension notifying me of Facebook messages and emails with Opera. I have a custom theme too, and I think they're cooler than in Chrome.
I like Chrome for each tab being a process though, it's one of the 2 reasons I have Chrome installed (another one being - better Google tools experience since Google somewhat block Opera with docs and maps).

I don't buy it. I don't think Chrome is the most popular.
Which is what I thought also. It seems a bit strange to me. Most of the computer illiterate use IE, and everyone else uses Firefox. That I have encountered anyway. Very few people I know use Chrome.

Yeah, Google geeks around me and some other geeks use Chrome. Other than that it's Firefox, sometimes Opera. And people who know nothing of computers stick with IE.

I really hope that does not happen. there is talk of them actually making their own phone this time. chances are they'll partner with HTC again.

Yup, so the rumor used to say. Opera team consists of the biggest amount of web geeks (the CSS creator and some HTML techs innovators), their browser engine is one of the most advanced and they're cheap to aquire, and most of all Opera wants to be aquired to gain support of a bigger company and increase their market share which has remained at the very same level as far as desktop browsers go for the last 10 years.

Opera has mad potential so anyone aquiring them would make a right decision doing so.

There are also rumors about Facebook OS and their phone - integrated with Facebook chat and Skype (trying to replace paid text messages and calls) and here Opera's engine would work as the web UI. It's just a rumor though, but a pretty cool one.

On a serious note, I love Opera and hope it doesn't get fucked by Facebook, I think that the Opera team wouldn't allow to fuck it up too much.

Does anyone think that Facebook are trying to become a 'Google killer'?
Of course. Their whole business model is advertising based. As is Google's. They are both competing for the same advertising dollars.

However, Facebook will fail at trying to defeat Google. Zuckerberg sure ain't no Larry Page or Sergey Brin. Word in the Valley is that the smartest engineers out there have absolutely no desire to work for Facebook.
