China - China slaughtered 50,000 dogs in a government-ordered crackdown after three people died of rabies, sparking unusually pointed criticism in state media Tuesday and an outcry from animal rights activists.

Health experts said the brutal policy pointed to deep weaknesses in the health care infrastructure in China, where only 3 percent of dogs are vaccinated against rabies and more than 2,000 people die of the disease each year.

The five-day slaughter in Mouding county in Yunnan province in southwestern China ended Sunday and spared only military guard dogs and police canine units, state media reported.

and youre just a human, so it would be right for someone to beat your brains out huh? animals have rights, especially considering we're animals too!

I don't know where you are but I consider my animals part of the family like most others do.
Sure it happens, I actually like dogs myself, but people need to start realizing that a dog is just an animal like any other, and I sure didn't see no people crying over all the cows that got killed trying to prevent MCD. Killing off dogs to prevent spreading disease to humans is perfectly fine by me.

How many chickens were culled because of the avian flu? Just because dogs are our pets doesn't make them more important than other animals. I see no complaints about the killing of other animals, make a post about cows, sheep, pigs, chickens and all other animals that are killed daily by the thousands

I agree somewhat with what you said, but take into acoount Dogs are compasionate, they love and care, and in China they are just now accepting Dogs as pets, and because of this incident they are ripping puppies out of kids arms and bashing their brains in. I am outraged because of that, and the Chinese can't do anyhting about it. Anyone can feel free to make posts about the killing of cows, pigs, chickens, ect., vegetarians or not, if they have a legit point. What China is doing is simply savage and wrong.

i understand we kill other animals, but its more out of need. look at tigers and other animals. they kill animals because its their meal. but they dont kill them for leather coats or because of a disease. if youre gonna kill all of them, at least let it be peacefully.

Perhaps they are killing those dogs for the safty of humans? Maybe there is a better way of going about this whole issue. But, I really couldn't care less if they killed all dogs.

There are people being massacred around the world daily, we should worry about that first. Just, consider them being slaughtered to be hot dogs or something.

Just like chickens or cows for ground beef. :D

These dogs were killed out of need too.

My girlfriend is originally from China, and she shed some light on the situation for me.

In China, people are't really supposed to have dogs. It's not against the law or anything, but it's viewed as a kind of slap in the face that you can spend money to feed a dog when there are people in the country who are going hungry. Thus, the government requires you to register your dogs and taxes them. Most people won't register their dogs to avoid these extra taxes, and thus can't take them to vets to get rabies shots or they'll be forced into the taxes.

When I showed her the articles, she understood why they're doing it (to protect human life, even at the expense of the dogs), but she didn't support the manner in which they were doing it (clubbing them to death).

It's not fair to call them savages. They have all these unregistered, unclaimed, potential threats to human life running around (if they were rats with the ebola virus, none of you would be complaining). It'd be too expensive and too time consuming to catch them all and test them. And even if they did, no one would step up and claim their pets afterwards because of the tax.

We're taught that animals like dogs are cute and are pets and deserve rights... but animals like cows, are a source of food and ok to kill... that's why you're going to get a shocking reaction when somebody reads this... I still think that's cruel what they did but when it comes to human safety... humans tend to come first.

Why does it take the second page to have a post posted which actually makes sense and has some kind of delibaration behind it! I find it just as surpirsing nobody hjas quoted it and giving this post a :thumb:. I hope AM's net penis doesn't erect more than it already is :horny:

I find it funny how you have young western children calling the fucking CHINESE uncivlised and stupid etc. I don't support the clubbing method of killing these dogs, but for western children to call the Chinese stupid... In their ancient wisdoms, the Chinese have been some of the most smartest peoples on the planet. And any kind of intolerance against them can only be explained as coming from pure ignorance.
