What celebrities, if any, make a difference in the world to you?

If not the world, have any made a difference in your life?

I guess I ask this because after having twitter I see that a lot are actually trying to do a bunch in their community, or even 'the world.'

This isn't a BIG thing, but recently, a sports star celebrity gave my niece her first book because she's technically a foster child under my moms guardianship.

I thought it was cool and nice.

If celebs don't make a difference...
should they or should they not make one?

unless its something out of the ordinary then i tend not to take notice

take Ayrton Senna for example. the man gave millions to charities during his life but it was never really known until after his death.

on the other hand when i see all over the media that a footballer who earns 150,000 a week gives 69,000 to haiti charity then i think "arent you fucking great, that pocket change for you" fuck off.

sands I dont agree
$69,000 is great contribution 2 Haiti
what if every 1 gave nearly half a week pays

People in haiti wont say Fuck off, you got more"

^^its pocket change to a professional footballer.

its the fact that is was publicised so much that annoys me. blatant self promotion.

like when Sean Penn went to New Orleans and made sure he brought photographers with him,.

yeah thats fucked up
only thing with media now is u got 2 get a feel if its self promotion or if it is paparazi
then they peddle it like they Have 2 follow someone have 2 hang on to someone

I think it's cool if they do it in the dark.

But these days it's mostly used to help their public image. Sure it's still great that those charities are getting the $ and attention, but I just wished they did it for the right reasons.

i have family up on the Gold coast, any way my cousin was drunk and swimming in a hotel swimming pool when he hit his head on the side of the pool. a person who stars in Australia's worst TV show neighbors was there, he didnt help. he watched my cousin drown.

thats a case of celebrities not helping.

Who was it?

I understand the "self-promo" type thinking but at the end of the day if they are helping out thats all that matters, if there is real change happening why does it matter for what reason. Also it kinda sucks for those people who are doing it because they really do care and they get put in that category because they get followed by stalkerazzi, atleast they are taking the camera's to the places that need the most exposure.

Isn't it punishable by law to do nothing and watch someone drown when you could've saved the person?

People like that should be thrown in jail imo. Valueless piece of shit.

I hate celebrities and I agree with Bobbo about footballers donating fuck-all money to certain charities and making a big meal out of it. Yeah 70k quid is a lot of money but it's not a lot of money if you're getting 150k a WEEK.

publicity stunts and self-promition etc, its not from the heart and purely for the right reasons.

shadows, your mum is a hero. she has given someone an opportunity, a chance in life.

i think celebs should use their power and influence in positive ways. we hear more about sports starts that crash their cars at 120mph and narrowly escape death or life threatening injuries; shouldnt there be more stories about the charitable work? then again, it shouldbe be so publicised unless there's no way of hiding the contribution made.

some celebs contribute not only financially but actively by getting involved in activities and events - which i think is more effective especially where finance will be wasted on other expenses like travel costs, packaging etc... a lot of money donated to oxfam is spent on travel and shipping expenses to africa. its the sad truth and the goverments there are corrupt, they fulfil their own needs before those of the population in need.

^ That's why I think there is no benefit or future in merely sending sacks of money. Instead of money for a hammer, send a hammer. Instead of 4 months salary for a plumber, send an actual plumber.

That, and microcredits. Effective aid.

after some good points in the thread

you googling people donating so you can spit at it? Fuck that
