Technology Can't get a game to work in XP :-(

Every time I try an run Splinter Cell it crashes an pops up a error message saying

"General protection fault!

History:"

after it's gone through the intro movie. I have the latest graphic card drivers installed for my card. The game works fine in Windows Me on the same computer an before anyone asks this is an official copy. I've also tried installing various patches but I keep getting a "Could not retrieve version number!" alert upon installing them :angry:
