Here's the deal..

My girl just bought a laptop. It has a built in card, so I obviously don't need an adapter to go along with the router. I have the cable modem all setup with the router also. When I try to connect to the internet, it doesn't let me. It doesn't work. I catch the signal from the router and I have a wireless connection, so that works fine. It's just the internet won't work. Does anyone have any suggestions or anything? ANY help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

i think this is the same thing that happened to me on my laptop. all i had to do was update my version of windows XP to the latest one.

not sure if that helps

yeah run windows update for the fuck of it.

but let me ask you, was the router operable before you tried the new laptop, or did you/she get the modem/router with the laptop?

basically, through the router's configuration interface you should be able to do some debugging. you should be able to test your connection and see if you get an ip address and so forth. to try and determine if there's a communication problem between the router and the wireless card, or if there's a problem with the actual internet connection.

I'm figuring maybe an IP Address wasn't assigned. I'm gonna call tech support again and ask to speak to a tech specialist. I'm not gonna deal with all that shit the regular tech people keep having me do. I've done it a million times and I know it ain't gonna work. So i'm gonna forget about the fact that she even has a router (not mention it at all to them) and connect the modem directly to the laptop. The router works, this I know. I'm sure they could give a fuck about a router, it ain't theirs. The modem is however and i'm sure they'd help me with whatever I need as far as that goes. I know once it works when connected to the laptop, it'll work when not connected and it's connected with the router again.

So hopefully it's that. We JUST bought the laptop a few days ago by the way. We bought the router the same day and the cable was installed a few days ago as well. Yesterday I think actually.. maybe the day before.

call ur internet company and ask them..they'll help u step by step

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Well yeah, I tried all the obvious solutions.. lol. The cable guy came today an I guess he said I hooked it up wrong. I wasn't there to talk to him though. I don't know how that's possible since there was only a few wires though.. but whatever. I'll look and see how HE did it.

is it sorted? im thinking that if you have windows, does an icon appear in your taskbar in the bottom right hand side near the clock?

you might need to right click, and then select repair.

You prolly had the ethernet cable going from the modem to the router in one of the numbered ports instead of the Wlan port. n00b.

LOL

Have you tried this Linx? It sounds to me that your router isn't configured to access the net (as you say you can connect), or that the cable company hasn't given you access.

Nope. I had the ethernet cable going from the modem to the internet port on the router. That's too easy. And that's one of like 3 plugs. That's why I don't understand how I could have set it up wrong.

But yeah, it works now.
