Hello people, me and a friend of mine are going to the US this summer and we were going to rent a car, but seeing as you have to be 25 to do that we are going to buy one instead. Now my question is what kind of rules are over there with byuing a car, do you have to have citizenship? do you have to have insurance? do you have to have a US driving licence? or can we just turn up and buy one and drive off? these may sound like silly questions, but answers woudl be very appreciated!!! :D:D:D:D

Ummm .. my mom said for insurance you probably dont need to be a citizen, but a visa might be useful if you have one. But they usually just ask for if youre a resident of the usa, so u just give them an address

You don't have to have citizenship. You don't need insurance, unless you're buying a fairly new car on credit. You probably don't need a license either. You are going to have to register the car, and transfer the pink slip and stuff. What you do is, you buy a car from a normal person, not a dealership. My friend drives a car with no registration, no insurance, and the pink slip aint even in his name. But, thats a little on the illegal side.
 
you dont have to be 25 to hire a car..

i went to LA and when i was 22 and we hired a pretty decent dodge.. had the basics we needed like air con etc... but being under 25 we had to pay a little more

my cousin and i wanted to hire a hummer or a ferrari for a day but you needed to be 25 for that :mad:

im working in the US right now (michigan) and i needed to have a license to drive the car outta the dealership. My uk license covered me only for europe...
it really depends on where you go, different dealers/states have different rules, i went to nissan and test drove a murano with no problems and i dont think i needed a us license to buy it.. the only thing is getting credit (unless you pay up front)
also as you have no driving history here you are gonna get stung on insurance..(like i did) even if you have a clean record back in the UK

It is for insurance purposes for the company who is renting the car too you. When you turn 25 your car insurance goes down dramatically cus you are no longer in the age of drivers who get in most accidents, therefore if you are under 25 your insurance is much higher.

Because younger people tend to be stupid when they are driving. Insurance for a 21 year old is twice as much than it is for a 35 year old with the same car and history.
 
dude get an international driving license.its good i think for a year,u dont need to do a test or anything. get it in your country though,u have to show them ur current license.

as for insurance,i dunno about the states,but in canada its mandatory
