Beanie Sigel found himself briefly back in prison today (November 10), this time over child support.
The Philadelphia-based emcee was jailed until he paid $26,000 in back child support. He was released in an hour, after paying the support and $2,000 in fines.
Beans was in court to answer to a contempt of court hearing over his delinquent child support payments. Earlier in the week, Philadelphia Police issued a warrant for the emcee's arrest after he missed a previous hearing regarding the matter.
During the hearing, Sigel claimed to have made cash payments to the child's mother, but he had no records to back his claim. Meanwhile, Walter McHugh, Sigel's attorney, also argued that his client has not been earning income to pay the support because of his recent legal troubles.
Chief Assistant District Attorney Maria McLaughlin noted that Sigel made a $5,000 donation recently as a reward in a high-profile missing-person case. McHugh claimed the reward money was donated in Sigel's name.
McHugh also argued that the prosecutors were pursuing this case more vigorously because Sigel was acquitted two months ago of a 2003 shooting. The DA called the accusation "insulting."
Despite calls, Beanie's camp has yet to make an official statement.
This year continues to be a trying one for Sigel. After being released from jail in August, his stepfather was found shot and burned to death in Philadelphia only weeks later. However, Beans seemed prime for a comeback as he recently performed with Jay-Z and friends at two concerts in New Jersey and Philadelphia.
