where do I go to change this shit? havent messed with it in a while; I figured it was in user cp but cant seem to find it now.

log off, then when you log back in, check the auto log in box or uncheck it as you would like it.

I'm personally a manual man myself. I hate the loss of control with auto. Though the new SMG gear knobs look sexy as hell on the M cars.
