Australia

I'm rather bored at the moment so I've decided to upload some pictures of this beautiful continent and maybe give some insight into what a geologist does.

The Pilbara is where I'm working, Perth is where I live. I work on an 8/6 fly in fly out roster, meaning at the beginning of the 8 days I fly up to the Pilbara (a town called Newman to be exact, and then drive three hours to camp), I work for 8 days, and then I fly into Perth for six days off. It's pretty sweet because my fly out and fly in days count as days worked.

And fuck it. Apparently the images have to be online for me to insert and them being on facebook doesn't count. Oh well.

A good friend of mine just went skydiving in Australia. It's been on my bucket list of places to visit for a while.

is the great desert comparable to the rangipo?
I have not yet been to New Zealand so I can't say for sure. However, I doubt it. The Rangipo is more of a "winter" desert whereas the Great Desert is what you picture when you think desert: hot as fuck, sandy, no frost days, minor rainfall and high evaporation rates.

It's worth the trip, it's just so hard to get to. From North America you're looking at 30-40 hours of travel time each way. So unless you're coming here to live you need a very long holiday to make it worthwhile.

so, how many days do you actually work in a year? someone do the math.
It's half the year. It's barely maths.

He has 2 travel days. 8 - 2 = 6. So therefore he works 6 days, and he has 6 days off.

Now I have been arrogant, I better be right...!

Shame you can't upload your pictures :(

I've been meaning to see Perth, it's like a 5 hour flight and it's the closest City to my left haha...

Have you managed to travel much?

I know. They're too big to upload onto image shack as well. If you're really interested PM your facebook and I'll add you. I have a whole bunch on there, and quite a few sweet ones of a dingo that was hanging around one day.

That's cool. I've got a mate who is doing the same thing, possibly at the same site, since I recall the name Pilbara/Newman etc.
He actually moved to Perth now, to make it easier for his family. Whereas before, he traveled back and forth to Sydney-Perth.

Hard work but I suppose the money is well worth it.

Do you know what he does?

I imagine doing fly in/fly out would be very hard once you have a family. I for one, don't think I'd be willing to do it. And that kinda scares me for my future. I'm hoping by the time I'm 30 or so I'll be content with working in an office.

A little, I've been all through Margaret River/Bunburry/Albany. I've seen most of the Pilbara but I still need to spend some time in Karijini National Park. I'm going to Brisbane/Gold Coast in October. I wanna use my tax return to see the Great Barrier Reef in August. In September I'm thinking of doing Melbourne to meet up with Woody and Stred (possibly Rukas?). Not sure when I'll get out to Sydney yet.

I wanna see the Great Barrier Reef at some point... Sydney is cool, if you go there you may as well make the effort to go out and see the Blue Mountains. When you are in Melbourne you MUST go to Lord of the Fries, it will change your life hhaaha

I believe he is a driller. He mentioned some promotions if he keeps it up for another year, so he is possibly assisting to gain experience?

Not sure. When I speak with him next, I'll find out more information.

Yes, family was the main reason he moved. He has 2 kids and a wife. They're settled now in Secret Harbour, or thereabouts.

Are you in it for the long term? What is your role/ position? Your plan to work in the office, that involves in mining related? I am considering moving to Perth later down the track. Closer to my hometown; Jakarta. :p

It sounds like he's an offsider. Most of them do that for a couple years and then get promoted to drilling. They make real good coin as well. I'm not sure what my plan is to be honest. Right now its work and travel. Going to the great barrier reef and cairns next week. Not sure if I'll stay in Australia more than 3 or 4 years.

Umm yeah, go see the Reef. Best experience of my life. Just got back last night. To be quite honest I have little to no interest in seeing the cities. Cities are boring. I'm going to try and get to Ayers rock in September.
