I realise this is probably not the place to discuss this. But sometimes I am surprised by the level of culture on this board. Does anyone here have an interest in art, and I mean buying pieces. Maybe even street art such as Banksy. I realise an original is out of everyones budget. But limited edition prints, although not cheap, are affordable, and if you live in the UK you can get an interest free loan.

Anyone with any art knowledge know if such a print, especially if signed, would be an investment, or would you be better off just buying a cheap print and appreciating it for what it is?

Obviously I am. I am not collecting though, I would if I could spare the money. But I think the Art world is too selective and unpredictable, if you are talking low budget stuff. Ofcourse the classics will be a sure thing, but you'd need millions. I would say buy to appreciate for yourself, you never know what they will be worth decades from now.

One of my professors had an original Banksy piece before his whole street art movement blew up. One of her "friends" stole it and she was never able to track the person down as they moved. She estimated the piece to be worth around 75 000$.

I dig art. I wouldn't pay for it though unless I had a significant amount of disposable income.

But taking a lease out on an artwork? Not in this lifetime.

Perhaps a Basquiat could make me reconsider.

yeah depending on the piece, some Art pieces are like investments - taking a risk that the value will grow and you'll have a nice nugget for retirement.

I remember in a Sociology class, I read a book about the art world and how pieces are valued. It's such bullshit. Basically, the gist of the 200+ page book is that the value of an art piece is whatever the so-called "Art World" deems it to be. Obviously, it's common sense, right? But such bullshit at the same time.

Yeah, they have all the power. They decide what is Art and how much that is worth. It is crap, so many artists who are now considered "Masters" where considered nobodies when they were alive. The value shoots up once one of these "critics" decides its incredible.

^I didn't mean an exact figure. But they decide whether it is high art or crap. Ofcourse anyone willing to pay $10,000 for an unknown artists work can if they so choose.

Yes, capitalism, bla bla. We know that. But with art, I feel like its different. A dollar doesn't have inherent value but gold does, right? Art should have inherent value regardless of what people think, you know what I mean?

Im a cheap skate when it comes to art to be honest. I have a few pieces of fan art from Classic Anime/Manga around my house, stuff like Akira etc, then I upload it to PosterIt, print off them, then put them in frames.
