Technology Any tips on how to get my Google Search ranking higher up?

My employer needs help with getting his business to show up higher on the search results.

His website is currently being designed, so as of right now, he is listed on various expert websites and directories - some of which do show high up (i.e. bottom of the first page). He would like to be in the top 3 at least and sustain that position - any idea on how I can do this?

So far, I've created a publicly viewable Google+ profile and Google+ pages for him and have linked together the URLs from various websites, his facebook page and LinkedIn profile. It seems that this hasn't really done much at all.

We need to promote this business on a local scale (online of course).

Not sure about how effective AdSense or AdWords are.

Mashable.com features articles on SEO frequently. There's also SEOLAND.COM that you should check out.

But my advice would be to hire a legitimate SEO company (if one exists) to help out with SEO. You can certainly read up on SEO at websites like the ones I mentioned but I don't know how effective those measures will be because if it were that easy, SEO companies wouldn't exist. Also, there's like black hat SEO type stuff and white hat SEO type stuff. If you engage in strategies that GOOG frowns upon, your website might get fucked off to neverland in search results.

But just because I have to be an asshole, if your boss is relying on you for SEO, I have to question his business acumen.

Thanks SOFI. He's a self-employed Psychologist who is writing a thesis and needs to promote his home business. Not really on a large scale but he just needs some help as he's dyslexic himself and not too computer-literate. I will check those sites out.
