I have been awake for almost 19 hours now and I have an exam in 5 hours. I have tried everything, but for some strange reason I couldn't sleep. It's too late to get some sleep now as I am still hyper and I need a couple more hours to revise anyway. I have pulled tens of all nighters in the past, but my only worry is that my mind may not be functioning properly at the exam, which accounts for 50% of the subject. Have any of you guys ever been through this? Do you know how I can give my brain, rather than body, a boost just for those couple of hours in which I will be doing the exam? I was told that proteins help, but I am not sure if they are good enough to solely rely on them just now.

in the back of your mind your thinking about the exam. your worried that your not gonna pass it.

ive had plenty of times i done this, just make yourself a real good breakfast in a couple of hours that will keep your brain going for those few hours during your exam. before you start your paper just take a deep breath and relax say to yoursef I WILL pass this.

now this is up to you.. if you choose to buy yourself a energy drink and drink that. make sure you eat something your brain will work better with food in your stomach.

Well, speaking from experience, you're an idiot for pulling an all-nighter the night before an exam. If it was an essay to turn in, it'd be ok. Studying a lot and sleeping 8 hours before the test gives your mind time to catalogue the information and make a nice outline in the brain. In your case, it'll be all over the place. My advice to you is get as much sleep as you can. It's pointless to study anymore, it's not going to go to your head. Now, if the test is strictly memorization and doesn't actually depend on thinking through a problem, then it won't be as bad.

So, don't think about taking stuff to keep you awake, think about taking something to make you fall asleep. You'll wake up feeling shitty, but better than not being able to think.

That's what I always, but I need something else to make sure that my brain works efficiently during the exam.
No.

Sleep now? I might as well just miss the exam. From my experience, you are better off awake and on some kind of a stimulant than asleep for such a short time. I don't sleep much anyway.
I started studying yesterday and I already have 80% of it covered. The more I read, the more I understand. It's not as if my mind is blocked. It's just that I don't want to have it all wiped off my memory as soon as I enter the exam hall. I can't take any risks.

if you know yourself that well why ask for our advice? Do what you think it's best for you. good luck.

a power nap on the sofa or floor with your legs lifted up, any place in the house that you're not used to sleeping is good. and like the dude says, eat a good breakfast, make sure an apple is included. keep it natural.

[edit] and get off the board, you need a blank mind.

Take some Modafinil, it's what I take for mild ADD. It's a wonder drug, designed for people with narcolepsy. Keeps you alert, eliminates feelings of tiredness (US Army have been giving it to their troops to give them an advantage, as have French troops in the Foreign Legion, and the UK Ministry of Defence is conducting experiments right now), if you take 600g you will be able to stay awake for 40 hours straight without feeling tired AT ALL. The best part is that you can still sleep whilst on it, if you decide you want to, and if you sleep for 4 hours you'll feel fully refreshed when you wake up as if you had slept for 8.

It has coginitive-enhancing effects too (ie. it increases your brain power), as well as neuroprotective effects, not to mention it's an anti-depressant, reduces smoking/nicotine cravings, reduces appetite, it's been used to treat recovering cocaine and amphetamine addicts.

It has no bad short-term side effects (in trials, the most common side effects people reported were headaches and nausea, but that was only 34% and 11% respectively......and 24% of the people in the trials reported headaches whilst on a placebo, and 3% reported nausea on the placebo)

Long time side effects are of course a possibility, but even though the drug is relatively new on the market it has been tested for over 20 years...and quite frankly the improvement I've felt since taking it is dramatic enough for me to not be worried about side effects.

Parent's Associations and Educational Boards have been having serious discussions regarding this over the last 2 years or so, it's one of their biggest issues - the reason being that many parents are worried about their children being at a disadvantage in exams if they decide not to give them the drug. It's a serious issue as the usage in educational environments is growing massively by the minute - I read a story recently where a University student had been providing it to his fellow students at over £8 a pill here in the UK.....he made over £3,000 profit in a month.

It's a controlled substance in the US, I believe. But here in the UK, it isn't. You can't buy it here though.

So yeah anyway if there was some way you could get that I'd advise it lol....probably a bit late now though.

I just logged in to create exactly same thread!!!! lol
I'm awake since 27 hours, Im doing a driving course, drink coffee whenever I can and feel like I'm barely living. Today when I sit in the bus back home I just had a black out and "woke up" 20 minutes later. I didn't know what happened. I looked at the time - it was 4:40pm, then after a "second" it was 5:00pm lol now it's 5:40pm and I'm already home, but probably soon I'll just suddenly fall asleep.
