Religion has also been twisted and used as a political tool as well. Many of these so called religious wars of the past have had strong political and economical undertones; leaders and warmongers had to gain support somehow right? What better way than to tell the uneducated and superstitious peasantry that it's the will of a God or the right of a certain religion. I'm not religious in any way or form, but any set of tools or information can be used for bad or good, whether it is of the spiritual nature, political or scientific. I worry more about the man wielding the information than the information itself.

Religions are memes from the spaces between synapses to nudge horny, bloodthirsty powerful apes away from pursuing their absolute short-term self-interest in favor of the tribe.
