there's nothing better then when you pick up a record without knowing what to expect, get home -- bump it -- and just get lifted by the quality of the music. today, i found that feeling out once again. this time with mf grimm's 'the downfall of ibliys: a ghetto opera'. the record is really good, the rhymes that grimm produce's are solid. he occasionally even lifts his vocals and some-what melodies to the beat which i didn't mind either. the beats are 90% great, some well one or two i wasn't feeling all that much.

i think i really made a mistake years ago by flicking away any opportunity i had to listen to his music. i always thought he was on some weird shit, but seeing my recent renaissance of musical love and overall appreciation for everything i came to my senses.

mf grimm is a hella nice emcee, now the case is clear. the next record i'll buy will be another mf doom one to give him a second chance, i didn't like madlibs/doom's = madvilliany all that much but i think that was just not understand where and how doom was expressing his music and which direction he was taking it in with that record. the beats still do annoy me, but i can live.

this thread serves as a start and purpose, to those who would never give something a chance to give it a chance. if i, who chronic/roaches can co-sign disliked doom/grimm in the past can now give them a good chance and listening. i think anyone can give any artist (they wouldn't usually bump) a spin. everything has borders and horizons when it comes to music, but borders and horizons can be broken or surpassed.

hip-hop is a beautiful thing, enjoy it all.

peace.

i just picked up mf doom "mm food" after hearing a bunch of shit about him. plus hes on my local record label rhymesayers (atmosphere, brother ali, eyedea and abilities), so i had to represent.

i was kind of disapointed. it seemed like over half the album wasnt even him rapping, just a bunch of old corny movie clips. the beats were hard to get into, and doom didnt seem very charismatic, which was what i was expecting.

i only gave it one listen, so i plan on giving it a few more chances to grow on me, but overall i was not feeling it. maybe im missing something

Yea the middle of the album was pretty gay. Just a bunch of skits one after another. But besides that there's 10 tracks with him rapping and all of them are great and then there's Guinnesses which is also pretty dope. "Potholderz" and "Rapp Snitch Knishes" shouldn't be too hard to get into. Can't imagine anyone not feeling those tracks.

DOOM's shit can be a very acquired taste, I wasn't feeling him much when I first heard him.
MM.. FOOD is probably not the best album to get introduced to DOOM.
Try to peep Operation: DOOMsday and Vaudeville Villain (under the alias of Viktor Vaughn).
He's got one of the best flows in the game and his lyrics are always on point. He's one of the best out there right now but if you can't feel him that's just personal taste. Don't give up too soon cuz MM.. FOOD is definately worth having.
Also peep Madvillain's (MF DOOM + Madlib) Madvillainy and King Geedorah's (another one of DOOM's aliases) Take Me to Your Leader (DOOM only rhymes on 4/13 tracks but he produced everything and the guest appearances all come correct. And the tracks he does rhyme on are dope as fuck).

7 Syns, peep Scars & Memories by MF Grimm, it's a collection of some of his older shit.

The best tracks might be the ones hardest to appreciate really.
Easiest to appreciate are probably these: "DOOMsay", "Go With the Flow" and "Gas Drawls". One of the best songs is called simply"?".
Just download the entire album though, there isn't a weak track on there.
His beats are very simple but he flips samples just lovely.

There's also a solo track by MF Grimm called "Tick, Tick..." on that CD which 7 Syns should check out as well. One of the best songs on the album.

"Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo that's the audio daily dubble/Rappers need to fall off just to save me the trouble/"
