A Chickasaw man shot his 75-year-old wife to death Thursday - a day after she filed for divorce - then the man surrendered to police in Fairhope where he was once fire chief.
Chickasaw police were notified about 7 a.m. Thursday after Loyd Vick, 75, surrendered, said Chickasaw police Sgt. Gerald Thornton. Carrie Vick was shot in the head in the couple's bedroom, Thornton said.
District Attorney John Tyson Jr. said Vick was charged with murder. Tyson said the couple had been married about 18 years.
Court records showed that Carrie Vick retained attorneys who filed a divorce suit Wednesday. The divorce was set for trial in August.
Former Fairhope Mayor Jim Nix said he has known Loyd Vick for about 50 years and was shocked by the slaying. Vick was Fairhope's fire chief in the late 1970s or early 1980s, Nix said.
Kyle Tucker, 35, who lives across the street from the Vicks, said he was surprised by the killing.
"They were a very quiet couple. You rarely ever see them outside. I saw them Tuesday outside cutting the grass. They were both out here doing yard work," Tucker said.

in 'check'. if he had done so, she wouldn't want a divorce.
