Baron McKinney did not get far before his little sister yelled to him and he jumped out of the moving car, police said.
"From witnesses, he jumped out of the car once it was placed in motion. It went about 10 to 15 feet. He jumped out, got up and took off running, and was trying to hide because he knew he was in trouble, I guess, with Mom," Patrolman Al Rhienhardt said.
The car went down a hill and smashed into a parked station wagon.
The boy was missing for a little while and people were worried he might have been under the car, News 8 reported.
"He was found just behind his apartment house," Rhienhardt said. "He was hiding in the bushes, in the brush line."
Police do not yet know how the boy got the keys, but the mother has said everyone else in the house was asleep.
No one was seriously injured in the crash, but Baron did have some scratches from his jump.
