I don't know much about the football world, but if Beckham is respected by his colleagues, I could see more players venturing to the US in a similar fashion in the future. That's if everything goes well and I don't see why not. The question isn't if soccer will become the most popular because it's not going to happen. However, its popularity will definitely increase. I don't know why you're so negative about America. America likes to play soccer, it's a fact if you go to any high school or university. The thing is that it doesn't have Michael Jordans and Jerry Rices of soccer to make it appealing. You could make a case that Donovan and others are good players but they're not doing the job. Popularity is relative anyway, so unless there's a certain magnitude of popularity you're talking about, your statement holds no value.
