sounds good, not too sure the price tag will be so attractive though. the higher the specs (or brand name) the higher the price... so it wont be for me. not yet anyway.

These devices are great, no real need for them just yet as theyre very luxurious rather than required. These are investments into the future (or simply for those who want to say they have the 'best' phone). I dont know how long i could keep the same smartphone for. It'd have to suit me really well.

Cost-effectiveness is a hige bonus for me. So i'd like to hang onto the G2 for a while now. I hope to place my G1 on auction tomorrow. Sad times. The new owner wont have the same feelings i did for that phone. It's been a truly emotional journey - highs (first time rooting, obtaining eclair and froyo) and lows (the RC's and experimental FC issues). But most of all, ive cherished the opportunity to learn something new.

It's just a gossip but Samsung's Orion would be similar to PSP 2's platform that all hardcore geeks are fapping to at the moment ;-)
Not much is known yet though but in theory it should be 25% faster (per core) than A8 (Hummingbird) at the same clock speed. Dual core is never twice as fast as single core but even if it was in this case that would grant max 2,5 times the speed of A8 Cortex. However Hummingbird was very fast. 2,5 times faster (at 1ghz) than Hummingbird would be faster than LG Optimus 2X by CPU power alone.

Now the cool thing. This is going to have 4 quite efficient GPU cores. Easily enough for Full HD recording and playback at 30fps. At the same time.

In short if Samsung Galaxy S2 gets released in its rumored form it's going to be the most complete and awesome portable electronic device ever made.
Yeah, I've been reading about the S2 for a while now (just rumors and stuff) and it seems like it has potential. I really like Samsung's Hummingbird but I dunno how I feel about the Galaxy S devices. I don't really like the design.

I mentioned the S2 elsewhere and someone said

"The phone has a 4.3 inch screen and has a resolution of 1280 x 720. It is incorporated with a 2GHz CUU, 1GB of RAM, and 4 GB of ROM. Its memory is of 32GB and it can be enhanced to the preferences of the users. Samsung Galaxy S2 has an 8 megapixel camera that is capable of capturing full HD video. The phone also has a Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi b/g/n and 3.5 mm headphone jack, an accelerometer and a gyroscope. The phone runs on Android 3.0."

I didn't know the specs had been released yet, but if these are indeed correct, this may be my next phone if it comes in GSM.

What are equivalent CPUs to the 1 Ghz Hummingbird? Or even a ranking?

I'm just throwing a few of the big ones I know and that's the Hummingbird, TI's OMAP (whichever the most powerful one used is, I think the Droid X), and the Snapbdragon (I'm assuming the newer 800 Mhz one is "better" than the 1 Ghz one).

How do the three stack up and is there anything else out there that comes even close? I know LG hasn't been a huge player, until now, with Android, but what CPUs do they use? The Optimus' DC is made by..?

Well, these specs on Galaxy S2 are most probably not true. Most of all it's said to have either a 1,2ghz or 1ghz processor - the Orion platform. 480 x 800 pixels, 4.3 inches screen, 1GB of ram, and Android Gingerbread (2.3).
Here are specs that are always updated according to the latest leaks:
Samsung I9100 Galaxy S2 - Full phone specifications

If it comes to CPU power the Hummingbird is slightly (20-30%) faster than the Omap in Droid X, despite some benchmark results. This is mostly thanks to Hummingbird's superior multi-threading and touches done by Samsung. Because both processors are based on the same architecture.
Now if it comes to GPU Omap in Droid X uses a SGX 530 (similar to the one in Iphone 4). The hummingbird packs SGX 540 which in theory is at least 5 times (!) as efficient if it comes to the amount of polygons it can render. In practice its real performance is more than twice as great as SGX 530's.
However there are no Android games that could take full advantage of any of them yet. (yeah, another point of why we don't really need anything faster in the closest future since nothing by now could even unleash a part of SGX540's true power). That's also why Samsung have downgraded the graphics in their Galaxy SL line to SGX 530.

In practice OMAP packs superior memory access which helps outperform Hummingbird's 20-30% faster CPU in benchmarks.
So to sum it up real life CPU performance of Droid X is almost on par with Samsung Galaxy S'/Wave's Hummingbird but GPU performance of Hummingbird is about twice as good thanks to its very nice GPU unit.

Snapdragon (the Desire/Nexus One version) is inferior to Hummingbird in all aspects.
Those new Snapdragons (2nd gen) are pretty close to Hummingbird if it comes to processing power (sometimes proving to be just a bit faster) but again far from it if it comes to the GPU. Hummingbird owns if it comes to graphics.

And about the last question LG Optimus 2X's processor is based on A9 Cortex and is developed by Nvidia as part of their Tegra 2 platform. Yeah, that's a new player in the mobile phone market. That might turn out to be interesting.

So the Hummingbird single-handedly fucks them all, it seems. Just needs to be in a better package than the Vibrant, Capitvate, Fascinate, etc. The Epic is Sprint-only, but... I could dig that.

What do you think about 4G? Looking at the trend of your previous posts, not really a necessity? I feel the same.

The Hummingbird has very similar processing power to the newest OMAP and newest Snapdragon because they are all based on the same architecture but yes, it packs much superior graphics. It's a very complete and well-balanced chip that does whatever you throw at it without killing your battery too fast. I mean - while peaking at 100% it would take at least 5 hours for a Hummingbird-based phone to drain a 1500mAh battery which is a pretty good result. In practice that means almost 10 hours of HD video playback for Samsung Wave or 8 hours for Galaxy S/Nexus S if I recall correctly. It's much more than competition from Motorola or HTC.

Personally I don't need 4G at all. Some people might find it useful - especially those who tend to hook up their laptops to their phones.
Me? I have 3G permanently turned off on my phone ;-) The only time when I'm on the internet on my phone is when I'm on wi-fi. Whenever I need to access the internet there's at least one unprotected wi-fi hotspot.

I guess the caps your carrier puts on your data plan is what causes you to be so restrictive with your data usage.

I think I read that VZW will have an unlimited LTE plan for $40, only $10 more than the standard unlimited 3G. 4G isn't in every city so why would anyone buy it knowing that? I don't Chicago, surprisingly, has 4G from the four major carriers.

I'm just throwing this out there, but this thread is great and all, but do you think a switch to the Wave would be even better? I know we had a SH one, but that one can fuck off. We can make a new one with the people that frequent this thread.

Just a suggestion. I have a Wave counter in Chrome that lets me know if there's a new Wave post. Perhaps when we mention a device, we can always go back a few weeks if we find new information on it and post it right back under the original mentioning of it so devices almost have little "sections."

Also, if we're all friends on their, we got GTalk and other stuff to stay in touch.

Just a thought. I thought it would be pretty cool to do that.

This one is also good:
"I don't appreciate Motorola's implication that an Android user could fall in love with an iPhone user."

Yeah perhaps that too made me have that habit. But like I said whenever I need to check something on my phone I use wifi because there's almost always a hotspot nearby and it's usually faster even than 4G - I have a 10gbit connection at my university, 20mbit at home and at least a few mbit at any nearby place with a public hotspot. And it's free. The only time when hotspots are not around is when I'm travelling and in that case usually 3G is also not around.
So having 3G on in my case would be just a waste of power.
Also, I really find EDGE (2g) satisfying for checking info. It's still over 200kb/s after all - fast enough to load headlines or make a taxi app download a list of local taxi corporations in about a second or open a small website in 1-2 seconds. I rarely download anything but if I do I always have a nearby wi-fi hotspot.

The performance increase is substantial.

I just bought a second G2 and rooted it in less than 7 minutes. Gonna flip it on eBay.

You can always return it to stock if you need to claim the warranty.
I know i'm late.. hi!
Um.. can you provide me with a link on how to root the G2? I've found so many sites online and I want to make sure i'm following instructions that work well and are fairly simple.

How hard is it to return it to stock if necessary? For some reason I was under the impression that there's no "coming back" from rooting the phone lol. IDK why.

I may root it (if it seems easy enough) and compare it to how the phone is running now. Then see if I like it or want to go back to how it is. I haven't really had much of a problem with my G2 (outside of not being able to send International MMS >.<).. but if it's that much of a difference *shrug* why not.

This message isn't only to Casey, btw.. just happened to quote his post. Also, thanks in advance guys.

Here's the guide you need. It looks more difficult than it actually is in reality.

HTC Vision - XDA-Developers

Essentially you just have to set up adb and push a few files.

Nah, those can screw up your file system partitions and they aren't permanent on the G2 anyway.
Hmm. Never knew that. Is there a way to fix it if it does fuck partitions up? Simple factory reset? It seems like the entire Droid community on AF has had success with it. I used SBF and had to flash this and that. Almost fucked it up. Got a "Code Corrupt" error. Scary and I would hate to have to root again.

Also, where do you guys go to read about phone hardware, more specifically the processor? I see all these "Snapdragon *model number*" and have no clue what the specs are. Or even a comparison or a tech spec list between all processors, Qualcomm or TI, etc.?
