There's a huge HTC fail, at least for me. HTC Desire HD and Desire Z (G2) both use normal LCD screens...
If you don't care about image quality then there's also that battery life factor. They will not last as long as the normal Desire which wasn't a battery life king in the first place.

Mixed with a relatively high price tag for what they offer they are not attractive at all to me. Nothing special about these phones.

Considering that Galaxy S vs. G2 "beef" now I think Galaxy S will be far superior, especially considering that it's that smartphone with best battery life.
Then when there's that Galaxy S with Qwerty it's better in everything than the G2.

So I just got back from the HTC event. It was awesome. Open bar, free food, etc. Truth be told I'm a little tipsy, I definitely took advantage of the open bar.

I probably got about 20 minutes total playing with a Desire Z/G2 and the same with the Desire HD. Verdict - holy fuck these phones are good. Super fast. Handled multitasking with a bunch of apps like champs. Full FroYo with no restricted features or anything like that.

Here's what impressed me the most:

1) Boot-up time. I honestly don't know how they did this. Both devices booted from completely off, to fully powered on and usable, in less than 5 seconds.

Comparatively - G1 takes about 40 seconds to boot. Hero takes about 30 seconds. Desire, about 15-20 seconds. Galaxy S - 10-15 seconds.

Literally everybody at the event was completely amazed by this.

2) Speed/response. THE most responsive home screens and touch screens of any device. Any previous HTC device, any Samsung device, even the iPhone 4 and iPad. the G2 and Desire HD are shitting on them. Incredibly smooth. Even with a shitload of widgets and heavy live wallpapers, these things aren't phased in the slightest.

3) The keyboard mechanism on the Desire Z/G2 is FOR THE MOTHERFUCKING WIN. The best physical keyboard of any device. Without question. Even with the supposed "added bulk" of having a physical keyboard, it is still thinner than the original Desire and the Nexus One.

The keyboard use was comfortable - a little awkward at first for me since I'm used to the G1 keyboard which is a 5-row and has much smaller keys, but nothing I wouldn't get used to very quickly.

4) Dual LED flash combined with 8 megapixel camera on the Desire HD is just insanity. The pictures we took with it are amazing. I thought the single LED flash on the original Desire was plenty bright enough - this takes it to the next level.

They gave away a Wildfire, a Desire, and a Legend in a raffle. Didn't win, but the person who won the Desire had a ticket number which was 4 or 5 digits away from mine, so I came close lol. I thought they might be giving away some of the new devices, but apparently they aren't final production models, there may still be minor OS tweaks before they start selling them next month.

I did get some HTC swag though - some lanyards and HTC branded mints lol. More importantly, I had a good conversation with the head of PR in the UK for HTC. He gave me his business card and asked me to email him which I will do tomorrow and perhaps I can get an endorsement deal with him they way that I had one with T-Mobile/Danger a couple of years ago when I was promoting the Sidekick.

HTC are really pushing these two new devices hard. More so than converting existing smartphone users, they want these devices to be the first smartphones for all the people still using dumbphones. I would honestly have difficulty picking any flaws in these two devices so they might just pull it off.

I took a bunch of photos and video but frankly none of it is better than stuff you can find elsewhere, like the links I posted earlier so there's no real point me uploading them.

I grilled the HTC guys on a bunch of stuff to do with Android, so if there's anything you guys want to know about these two devices, holla and I'll try to help.

Overall conclusion - once these two devices hit next month, they are EASILY the best two Android phones on the market. Even the Galaxy S with it's SAMOLED screen and front-facing camera is not comparing to the Desire HD for speed, responsiveness, power, and brilliance.

Right now - I'd have a hard time picking which one I want. I'm leaning towards the Z cos of the QWERTY, but the bigger screen and better camera of the DesireHD are incredibly impressive.

amazing, CR. 5 seconds.

tell me... how is the flip/slide mechanism? does it allow manipulation at the hinge to alter angle that the screen faces? or is it slide up and over and back down only?

I want to kill my friend every time he receives a text message.

DROOOOOOOID

DROOOOOOOOID

DROOOOOID
Haha, it used to scare me every time I switched ROMs and the default notification was the Droid sound and I forgot about it when I got a text.

Managed to shave off a few seconds from my already quick boot time by removing the boot-animation altogether. Now it's well under twenty seconds.

Oh man, my battery life is fucking ridiculous. 26 hours, niggas!! Of heavy-ass use and this thing will not die.
Looks like your previous phone had a really shitty battery life :p
Some Droid users actually bitch about its battery life compared to other Android phones. At least its a common "Motorola problem" that I see on Android boards.

But yeah, once I had a phone I had to charge everyday and the next phone with average battery life seemed very awesome to me. Now battery life is one of my top priorities.

Previous phone? It was a previous ROM. And kernel. The combination of the two have stunned me. I am still looking at 30% battery life. Ridiculous. I've been texting all morning and fapping to girls on my Facebook's pics all day.

Yeah, it's ridiculous. I rebooted right now because my phone started to lag a good bit because it hadn't been restarted in six days. They say restarting does nothing on Linux, but I disagree from experience. They're making Linux out to be Jesus himself these days; no task killers, no reboots. Fuck off.

Still, no charge time at all Obviously it reset the counter upon restarting the phone, but I'll grab a snapshot in a few days after a full charge tonight.

My buddy has an iPhone 3GS and says his lasts two days, no problem. He also doesn't have data, so that could be one thing. I've used 500 MB of data since the seventh of this month. So a week and two days. Not bad. But I have been using data a ton recently, so it's not like I'm just leaving my screen off this whole time.

Remember, it's overclocked to 1.25 Ghz and 600 Mhz minimum. Ran a few Quadrant tests to confirm that it was running that high and it was. I love this thing.

I've been running Linux on my laptop for like 3 months now and it's fucking bad ass. Shits all over Windows 7 and OSX, at least for my needs.

I have a dual boot with Win7, but at this point I haven't even booted into it for a couple of weeks now. I like Win7, but I prefer Linux. And of course, OSX is a bag of shit.

Linux for the win.

I lost my phone tonight :(. I have no idea how, it has to be in my car somewhere but I searched it completely. I'm hoping tomorrow it magically appears and I find it with the help of daylight. If not I'm going to be phoneless until Oct. 6th rolls around or whatever they're saying the release date for the G2 is

Ah damn. It's instances like this that make me want to install that app that tracks your phone using GPS. Problem is, it runs in the background all the time and I'd turn it off eventually and then lose it.

I haven't lost my phone, though. None of the ones I've owned the past five years. Fingers crossed it stays that way. But my phone never leaves my possession. Always in hand or pocket. And at night, if it's on the charger, it's right by my bed. I protect the bitch.

Hope you find it. Although October sixth isn't too far off. You 100% sure you're sticking with the G2? Not switching carriers for something else?
