now that i think of it, to date ive convinced 2 people (a couple) to each get Droids, 2 people to get HTC Wildfires, 1 person to get the SE X10, 1 person to get the X10 Mini Pro, 1 to get a HTC Desire, and 1 to get a Samsung Galaxy S. Im working on convincing some of my closer relatives to get some Android because then we can use the gtalk service and apps together.

Lol, my aunty wanted the G1 because the ABC Animals kept my 3 year old cousin busy. she was getting frustrated at the toucscreen awww lol. it was so unresponsive to her haha.
hmmm....and who convinced you to go Android?

You should see my figures. Even without the 5 or 6 people on this forum that went Android because of me the figures are still impressive lol.

Oh and to anyone worried about the G2 processor, because of the architecture of the processor, the 800MhZ Scorpion is actually faster than the 1GhZ Snapdragon processors and the Texas Instruments processor in the Droid-2 and Droid-X.

The scores it got on all tests rank the G2 speed and power level equal to the Galaxy S, which is definitely impressive.

The GPU in the new Scorpion processor is 4x more powerful than the Snapdragon, and the chip is much more efficient, resulting in more work per clock cycle and much improved battery performance.

Regardless, it'll hit 1GhZ like a champ when rooted and overclocked anyway. (and with Cyanogen getting one of these, this thing will most likely get rooted before it's even out lol)

Close ups of the keyboard:

I'm definitely impressed with the "www./.com" button which will come in VERY handy, and those buttons with the white squares on them can apparently be set to launch any app.

I'd probably set one for voice actions, one for Twitter (pop keyboard, hit button, start writing tweet), and I'm not sure about the third. Maybe SMS. It would make sense to have those buttons trigger apps where I'd be using the keyboard.

^^ sounds very good. all it needs is a super amoled screen and i'll buy it lol. i want samsung to release something quick.
What's your obsession with Super AMOLED screens? They are not without criticism, you know.

Where the SAmoled screen has richer colours and deeper blacks, the colours aren't necessarily true and have an overbearing quality on the screen (btw I am using the Wave rather than Galaxy, same screen though). My biggest issue with the SAmoled screens are they are still PenTile Submatrix screens, the resolution is interloped and far less than they claimed. Read this thread about it, also on XDA forums. For reading any type of text including E-mails, books, web pages etc etc there is a noticeable difference. Don't just be fooled by the colours, there is a lot more to a screen!
SAMOLED Pentil subpixel layout makes text look jaggad compared to LCD. The reason for this is that the true addressable resolution of SAMOLED displays is not 480x480 but 393x653. This is the one drawback of this display. See my other posts where i compared the LCD of the EVO vs the Galaxy S. Additional problems are screen burn in and poor power consumption for mobile devices. Text on white backround (web browsing, document viewing) consumes 330% more power than LCD. The color saturation, contrast, black level, and viewing angles are stunning though.
Super AMOLED screens are cool, but they aren't the be-all and end-all and they certainly aren't without criticism.

There's at least 10 more important factors to me when buying a new device.

LOL I just heard that the Samsung Fascinate (Verizon Galaxy S) comes pre-loaded with Bing as the search engine and you can't replace it with Google!!!!

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Total Verizon fail!!!! This phone needs root FAST to deal with that abomination.

I mean, seriously, BING? LMFAO

the keyboard looks really good. can you believe i only realised a few months ago that the G1 keyboard has two '@' buttons. i always pressed the alt + 2 combination for a whole year lol.

i hope the G2 has that feature as i find it helps save time. if only it were a 5-row keyboard also, because i quite like the idea of having keys unique to just number functions.
The shift arrow buttons seem to waste a bit of space, there could be something else there.

i prefer the G1 keyboard (from what i can see and compare to the G2 with), but the G2 should be a better quality one. my G1 spacebar is kinda jammed, and so are the shift and alt buttons. it is sooo frustrating, especially when ive taken so much care of it. i dont know how general wear and tear could be so bad. i do 90% of the time use the keyboard though.

TechRadar says the G2 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM7230 CPU:
T-Mobile G2: US gets HTC Desire Z early? | News | TechRadar UK

the only thing with me getting this phone is that i HAVE to upgrade with t-mobile. i cannot move to O2 and get £125 off the contract, which i why i was open to moving to O2 and get the Galaxy S.

I shall see the pricing and see whether i want to keep my G1 for a bit longer and also what deals t-mobile offer me - hopefully something really good.

they said that the G1 was one of the devices that were more difficult to brick, i hope its the same case with the G2.

Still no front facing camera on the G2 which kind of pisses me off. Other than that the phone is pretty damn good. but with all the chip news coming out I think I'll wait two months to see what else comes out

I thought the same before about 5-row keyboards, but I actually checked out a 4-row keyboard on a WinMo HTC device and it didn't really make any difference so I'm cool with it.

Also, because the G2 keyboard stretches across the whole width of the device unlike the G1, the keys are bigger, which is nice.

That's strange. I've had my G1 a lot longer than you have and there's no wear and tear at all, except for on the paint where it has chipped in a few places and the little cover thing that covered up the USB port which fell off a while back. There's nothing wrong with my keyboard at all.

TechRadar is wrong, it's a Scorpion chip, not a Snapdragon.

http://www.androidguys.com/2010/09/02/tmobile-scoop-confirms-g2-800-mhz-scorpion-processor/

As explained, the Scorpion architecture is far superior to the Snapdragon. The main difference is that the Snapdragon uses integrated graphics whereas the Scorpion has a dedicated Adreno 205 GPU.

Look at the OpenGL scores:

HTC Vision is the G2, and this test was on a pre-production model.

As you can see, outperforming the Galaxy S (Captivate).

Make no mistake - this is a high-end device.

No front-facing camera is a minor annoyance.

Frankly - nobody I know with iPhone 4's, HTC Evo's or Galaxy S's is even using it.

Hell, my wife's Nokia N95 had a front-facing camera three years ago and she never used it, not even once.

I don't like this whole attitude of "Oh, Apple's doing it so it must be worth doing". It's a "Keeping up with the Joneses" attitude when frankly we all know Android and the high-end hardware running Android is superior, regardless of a front-facing camera.

I for one just want to be able to utilize a front facing cam, I'll actually use it. I skype with my fam in Cali and Hawaii and shit so being able to do it on the go would be sick.

Some bad news I just found out...My sister and I share a family plan, here ex boyfriend got in on the plan with us and used MY fucking upgrade to get a piece of shit mytouch3g. I gave him nor tmobile the ok to use my shit so I'm back and forth with t mobile arguing with them about honoring my upgrade. I'm thinking they will honor it but if they don't, Casey, I call dibs on the phone you get for free when you go to that convention thing lol

In the official T-Mob press release for the G2 it says it has a Snapdragon™ MSM7230. So i wonder whats up

So the 1ghz Snapdragon everyone uses is QDS8x50, not MSM7230. Why don't they just call it Scorpion. And Casey is right, the Adreno 205 GPU is f'n fast, 3-4 tiems faster than the Adreno 200 which is in the QDS Snapdragon. So GPU intensive tasks this thing will be a beast, CPU intensive probably about the same as the rest. This build is based on 45nm design though so less battery consumption, heat etc. As well as it being down at 800mhz I expect the G2's battery life to be impressive. Once new Kernels roll out for this and we're seeing 1ghz+ speeds, yay. One thing that does piss me off though is that this awesome GPU is featured on Snaprdragons that clock in at 1ghz and 1.3 ghz speeds. So going with 800mhz is still a question

Yeah I feel that, I use Skype on the daily as well but TBH I've yet to find an occasion where I want/need to video chat and I don't have my laptop with me. That and the fact that the only Skype app for Android right now doesn't support video chat so you'd be using apps like Qik for video chat anyway..... (there was Skype video support in Fring but Skype pulled it).

That's fucked up about your upgrade, I would be wildin out on dude. I don't know how it works over there with family plans and shit but I hope you get it sorted.

I don't even know If I'll be able to get a phone even if I do go to the HTC event on Wednesday. The invite says something along the lines of "we will be giving out free devices to some of our attendees", I have no idea on what basis that happens. But if I do go, I'm going early. Like at least an hour before the event start time on the invite. If I have to sit and drink for a while at the bar then that's no big deal, lol. I want a damn device like right now!!!! lol

Google Maps Update Brings Walking Navigation and More to Android | Android Phone Fans

Google just updated Maps for Android to version 4.5, and this one is a doozy. Three fairly substantial features have been added into the app to increase usability and provide a seamless experience no matter what method of travel you choose.

The most major update is the inclusion of Walking Navigation (beta, of course), what Google deems the “marriage” of Navigation and walking directions. You will get the same trusty navigation you have come to love from Google Maps with some tweaks here and there. Obviously, walking navigation uses walking directions to provide the most efficient route for a pedestrian, and does so with satellite view as the default for easy identification of landmarks. The screen and map orient to the way you hold your phone and the direction you face, and upcoming turns have vibration notifications so you don’t get lost with your phone in your pocket.
The next update comes in the form of Street View smart navigation. With this update using street view now feels a lot more like its desktop counterpart. Simply drag and drop Pegman where you want to view and the app will zip you off like you’re in the real world

The final addition is a new Google Maps search bar. The new bar is always available at the top of Maps to be accessed quickly to search, open Places, toggle Layers, or pinpoint your current location. Results can be filtered by distance or rating, pricing of local businesses are categorized, and cross streets are listed.

Hmmm. I'll have to take a look at my cousins Desire and see for myself.

I usually find the people on XDA to know what they are talking about though.
Yeah but they often make problems sound way more serious than they are. As it is with most pro tech boards on the net :p

Most of all interpolation on AMOLED screens isn't noticeable unless we're talking about some specific situations like mentioned in your quote. It's also way better at displaying non-native resolutions than LCD does.
It's true that SAMOLED drains your battery faster when displaying all-white but does it waaay slower while displaying darker things. It does not drain any energy while displaying black. If 2/3 of your screen is black - for example if you have black background then it only drains energy for bright elements that are displayed because it has no backlighting. On average it uses way less energy than LCD does and it wastes none unlike the LCD.
Whenever you "power on" the LCD it'll drain your batteries regardless of what you display there.

There are a few drawbacks to S-AMOLED. It's colors are beautiful and vivid but not as realistic as they should be. But that's how Amoled is overall. It's not a perfect technology yet. Actually none is but it is the best one there is at the moment.
It's the no.1 thing that I wish I had in my phone that I don't (or second to a LED flash).
I really love these screens. Beautiful.

I was able to fuck around with my friends galaxy s and the screen is god damn amazing. we had it side by side with the iphone 4 and im taking the galaxy s for sure, avatar on it looked fucking amazing.

So my uncle is head of some sort of department for samsung, he pretty much controls most of the western US. He gets demo phones by the truck load pretty much, he offered me a galaxy s today, sadly it was for at&t :(

VZW is being very stupid with their methods. At first, it was the Fascinate that had Bing, then there was a rumor that all Android devices on VZW were stuck with Bing because of the new deal they signed with Bing/VZW. Now they're saying only some will ship with Bing. How do they decide this?

I say this a lot, but Android is growing too fast for its own good.
