Apple was offering $199 8gb 3G ($299 16gb) and now for the same price they're offering $199 16gb 3G S ($299 32gb) with some improvements. To leave the OPTION for those that want to pay less for their phones, they have the $99 8gb 3G.

If you look passed the Apple marketing scheme, you are simply getting an updated phone for the same price as before. The iPhone product line has been updated every year since its release in the summer of 2007. Don't get your hopes up so high next summer if you don't want to be disappointed.

Sandeep, I hope you didn't go out and get yourself an iphone.

Go to T-Mobile and get yourself a G1 instead. I'll hook you up with all the killer apps. Once you go Android, you don't go back.

I would rather have one internet browser under strict control of Apple than several loose ones.
Is that supposed to be a good thing? So you'd be quite happy to use IE forever despite the likeliness that hackers will exploit it, spyware and pops up fly out everywhere etc etc? I guess so, seeing as its was made by Microsoft..

yeah, but most people already got the iphone. are they going to upgrade to the new one? apple could have stepped their game up. seriously.

i am not denying the iphone 3g is a great phone. my bf has it, it's fun. i wouldn't buy it for myself but it's fun and useful. but this "upgrade" or as you may want to call it "new iphone" that the 3g s is, is lame.
okay, let me rephrase. they could have done better for those wishing to upgrade to the 3GS. but for me, and a minority of people who are getting the 3GS as their first iPhone it is a good deal.

Closed does not always equal to bad and open does not always equal to good.

Open source as a *business model* does not always equal to good. Closed can be protection for creators and also pro-industry in a capitalistic society, but socialists like Jeremy would want me dead for saying such thing. As a freeloader, open is far more beneficial. Isn't that right, Jeremy?

Both are good and bad imo. Innovation and competition can come from both sides, can't it?

Today I played with a new Samsung Avila. It's a low-end 50$ Iphone-like phone.
I found out that Samsung's new UI is awesome. I have to say that I love its intuitive and good looking menu with all those widgets and stuff.
They improved A LOT since their bad experience with Omnia.

shitty quality but basically that's how it works:

yeah it's one of the cheapest touchscreen phones here. It doesn't have much more than an average quality touch screen (like in original iphone), a 3.2mpx camera and an average quality mp3 player. It doesn't even have wifi.

There's also a new Samsung phone with the newest Android OS:

Samsung I7500 preview: First look - GSMArena.com

And Omnia 2 which totally shits on most other phones technically since it rocks a 800mhz processor, camera with image stabilization, autofocus etc. and an AMOLED display but was unfortunately contaminated with Windows mobile:
Samsung I8000 Omnia II preview: First look - GSMArena.com

At least the user interface is made by Samsung and it's really cool since it's hard to spot that you're even working on windows mobile.

But guess what?
There's also a smaller version without Windows mobile and with similar specs:

I find it so funny that Apple screams loud about Iphone's "new" video recording function while new phones already record videos in D1 (small hd)

Yeah the i7500 (aka Samsung Galaxy) is hot. Ultra hi-res screen, Android OS, 8GB of INTERNAL storage with an extra external storage slot too, 5MP camera, LED hardware flash for the camera and 3.5mm headphone jack makes this the Android phone to beat. My cousin is looking at picking that up when it launches in the UK.

That and the upcoming HTC Hero are the two Android phones that will take the most of iPhone's market share within 18 months.

The i8000 is much superior though with a 800mhz processor (which is almost twice as fast as in the "newest" iphone 3gs btw), slightly better camera (5mpx with image stabilization, smile detection and autofocus), better AMOLED(!) screen (vs 16M color OLED in I7500 which is still damn awesome), 16gb internal memory expandable with memory cards (up to 32gb each), HD video recording and TouchWiz UI which is pretty awesome.
I just can't believe that they decided to make it use Windows Mobile instead of Android ehhh. They literally fucked it up. The alternative version is Windows-free but it uses some shitty Samsung system.

It's also frustrating that most of the newest Nokia phones use Symbian. Can't they see how much it sucks? It's the most annoying and failed mobile operating system ever created.

Wow getting an Iphone if you could get that HTC would be a terrible thing to do.
EVERYTHING in HTC Dream is superior to Iphone's.
And I mean it - there's no single thing or technical parameter in which Iphone is better than Dream.

There's not much going on in Tech talk so I think that a new poll wouldn't bother anyone at all.

edit: my bad, Iphone 3gs has more internal memory but Dream uses memory cards which in my opinion is a much better solution since you can replace them and have for example multiple 16 or 32gb cards.
If you don't need that much memory you can get 8gb Kingston or Sandisk cards for 20$.
And before someone comes out with a 600mhz processor vs. 528mhz - Iphone rocks an ARM processor which is less efficient than those from Intel or Qualcomm PLUS Android is more optimised and less resource-demanding.
http://furbo.org/2007/08/21/what-the-iphone-specs-dont-tell-you/
I believe that Dream is at least twice as fast as 3gs.
Also, if you want to get all techy on Iphones which wasn't mentioned in the link above is that they use really slow ram which is even undervoltaged and underclocked possibly to preserve the battery life. Apple was supposed to use Nand flash memory chips but for some reason I think it didn't happen.

Right now, the Dream/G1, and it's keyboardless brother the HTC Magic (aka G2 on Vodafone) are the best smartphones on the market.

By a fucking mile.

Sandeep - do the right thing, don't be a sheep. Get a G1. Like masta says, you'd have to be mad to go with the iphone.

There's a thousand reasons to get a G1, and none to get an iPhone, unless you want to spend more money on a useless piece of junk. People who don't give a shit about phones get iphones because they're suckered in by marketing.

With the G1, your options are endless. iPhone - you have no options. Hell. the iphone operating system has been out for THREE YEARS and they only just added basic functions like video recording and copy and paste. If that was any other company, their consumers wouldn't stand for it. But Steve Jobs has his army of fanboys wrapped around his little finger.

Android operating system is the greatest mobile experience out there.

Really, you just need to look at the way you use the internet. Do you use Apple products in your daily usage of the internet? Probably not. You probably don't use Apple's email service or browser, or visit their sites to enable you to do what you need to do. But I bet you use Google Search. I bet you use YouTube (owned by Google). I bet you use Google Maps. To use Google's mobile OS is to harness the power of the internet as we know it by having these things natively and as an intrinsical part of your operating system.

Oh.....full Adobe Flash support coming to Android by the end of the year too. Will you see that on the iPhone? Well, ask yourself how long it took for the iPhone to have basic functionality and there's your answer right there.

i had already made my mind up 100% that i was going with the iPhone 3G S... 100%!! i was really excited and couldnt wait (i can get 30% discount off a friend, which makes the monthly line rental £24.50 per month). But now i am in two minds, i know that open source is the way forward and google are very innovative with all the products they are releasing. i really admire them.

i want lots of memory (like on the iPhone) so that i can play music. - I already have an iPod Nano 1G, but i think that after 5 years, its going to die out soon.

I guess i'll sell my 8GB Micro SD card with my N95 and get a 16GB equivalent.

Casey, Masta - you know what im saying? ^^

there's just one question. how does the G1 play downloaded files from youtube, such as mp4 from file2hd?

casey, could you test a music video or a random comedy clip, downloaded from youtube please? thank you.

correct me if im wrong, but all the apps for the G1 are free, right?

also, what is the battery life like? i know the 3GS has excellent life and after having to charge my N95 amost every two days, it becomes annoying so i would like a more efficient phone.

In conclusion, the most important factors for me are:

Usability, Battery life, Total cost (iPhone will be £900 over 2 years, but if i can get discount it will be cheaper than G1 contract, at approx £28 p/m - if you include the £90 cost of handset and spread it over 24 months), value for money, apps, if they can read and edit documents, download rar files from blogs, and any sort of connectivity or compatibility with other products so the device is more versatile, good media player for music and video.
