The HTC Magic (on Vodafone) has slightly better battery life than the G1. Apart from that it's the same but without a keyboard. youll need a keyboard for the emulators though.

i dont have any problems downloading files of any type or playback of any media.

Not all the apps are free. But a good chunk of them are. I've only bought maybe 5 apps all around £1-£2 each and I have almost 100 apps installed.

Basically G1 is way more versatile.
Yeah Magic is a bit smaller and has a better battery life but imo that keyboard is one of the coolest things in g1. Believe me that writing texts on a touchscreen is frustrating as hell. Iphone's battery lasts for about 2 or 3 days of average use. That's not much but on the other hand quite normal for a phone with energy draining hardware and quite huge screen.
Nokia n95 has one of the worst batteries I've ever seen though so it's hard to beat.
OLED screens (fe. in new Samsungs) will definately change that since some OLED-related technologies can use as much as 10 times less energy than LCD plus they are much superior (no trailing or ghosting, no problems with backlight leakings, unlimited viewing angles and more vivid colors).

I can't comment on other things as I don't have G1 personally. About memory - if you need a lot that's why HTC uses memory cards. You can use 1 memory card or a few and replace them for example when you want to listen to the music. That means basically unlimited memory. There's no way to extend memory in an iphone and it's size is limited to 8/16gb which is less than a single biggest micro sd card on the market right now (32gb I believe).

thanks for all your input guys (masta and casey).

casey, i know this probably sounds stupid... but is there any way you can get any type of discount for me? i can still get that iphone for a cheaper monthly rate.

i had a play around on the G1 today, and i want the G1 now.
