I think the reason why Apple is so closed about their Apps is because if some dimwit releases a flawed app, Apple gets the heat from haters like Casey saying iPhones do not work.
I would rather have one internet browser under strict control of Apple than several loose ones.

I'm actually not an Apple hater. Many aspects of their computers are superior to PC's but equally there as many aspects where PC's are superior and that's why I don't participate in Mac VS PC arguments. I love both.
However, I do think their success with the iPod made them a bit too cocky and I think their move into phones was a bad one because the fact is that their phones are not superior to other smartphones on the market, in fact they are light years behind in many ways (i don't even consider them smartphones, if you can't run more than one app at once, you don't qualify). Locked down proprietary software and a closed attitude does not help anyone in an open source world. I don't want to be limited to Apple's code of conduct as far as what I do with my phone, and with Android, I'm not limited at all.
Apple's attitude towards their App store is just too much of a dictatorship for me. Who gives a flying fuck is somebody makes a game where you have to shake a baby, for example. Apple don't control MY morals and what I feel is right and wrong. If I think a game like that might be a good laugh and know damn well I'm not going to go out and kill a baby because of it, I should have the option of playing it, without jailbreaking the device. Android's market, people can publish whatever they want and the popularity of applications is dependent on user votes and reviews alone, so if something is buggy and sucks, you know not to install it because the rating is low and everybody is slating it in the comments.
Another example is Apple's completely bizarre initial refusal of the update to the Nine Inch Nails iPhone app. Basically, the original app allowed for GPS tracking and location-based live chat and easy access/posting/uploading the the Nine Inch Nails forum.
The second update added the ability to stream all of NIN's music through the app, and was initially rejected because Apple took issue with the content of the album 'The Downward Spiral'.......umm, WHAT THE FUCK APPLE? You aren't right-wing moral crusaders, and don't you sell the album (and a hell of a lot more music with a lot more questionable content) on iTunes anyway?
Trent rightly publically lambasted them over this, despite him being a known Apple fanboy in the first place, and they eventually relented. It wasn't long after this that Trent announced upcoming availability of the app on Android and Blackberry OS also.
Obviously they did the right thing eventually for Trent, but how many instances have there been where the developer has been refused for some reason, had no public platform to complain and ultimately hasn't been able to get his app out there? I don't appreciate that kind of shit going on.
