I think the reason why Apple is so closed about their Apps is because if some dimwit releases a flawed app, Apple gets the heat from haters like Casey saying iPhones do not work.

I would rather have one internet browser under strict control of Apple than several loose ones.
For the record, the Android based WebKit browser is superior to the iPhone browser. I use Firefox and Google Chrome browsers on my computer and definately not Safari because it's a terrible browser. I have two browsers on my phone, the default one and Opera Mini - which many regard as the pinnacle of mobile browsers across many platforms. So while I understand the point you were trying to make, the example itself is completely invalid.

I'm actually not an Apple hater. Many aspects of their computers are superior to PC's but equally there as many aspects where PC's are superior and that's why I don't participate in Mac VS PC arguments. I love both.

However, I do think their success with the iPod made them a bit too cocky and I think their move into phones was a bad one because the fact is that their phones are not superior to other smartphones on the market, in fact they are light years behind in many ways (i don't even consider them smartphones, if you can't run more than one app at once, you don't qualify). Locked down proprietary software and a closed attitude does not help anyone in an open source world. I don't want to be limited to Apple's code of conduct as far as what I do with my phone, and with Android, I'm not limited at all.

Apple's attitude towards their App store is just too much of a dictatorship for me. Who gives a flying fuck is somebody makes a game where you have to shake a baby, for example. Apple don't control MY morals and what I feel is right and wrong. If I think a game like that might be a good laugh and know damn well I'm not going to go out and kill a baby because of it, I should have the option of playing it, without jailbreaking the device. Android's market, people can publish whatever they want and the popularity of applications is dependent on user votes and reviews alone, so if something is buggy and sucks, you know not to install it because the rating is low and everybody is slating it in the comments.

Another example is Apple's completely bizarre initial refusal of the update to the Nine Inch Nails iPhone app. Basically, the original app allowed for GPS tracking and location-based live chat and easy access/posting/uploading the the Nine Inch Nails forum.

The second update added the ability to stream all of NIN's music through the app, and was initially rejected because Apple took issue with the content of the album 'The Downward Spiral'.......umm, WHAT THE FUCK APPLE? You aren't right-wing moral crusaders, and don't you sell the album (and a hell of a lot more music with a lot more questionable content) on iTunes anyway?

Trent rightly publically lambasted them over this, despite him being a known Apple fanboy in the first place, and they eventually relented. It wasn't long after this that Trent announced upcoming availability of the app on Android and Blackberry OS also.

Obviously they did the right thing eventually for Trent, but how many instances have there been where the developer has been refused for some reason, had no public platform to complain and ultimately hasn't been able to get his app out there? I don't appreciate that kind of shit going on.

It's fucking garbage, this one it is.

But.......... I hear they're coming out with something big soon. So that's maybe something to keep an eye on, else from Casey long schlong.

Casey, you've got me thinking about the whole open source thing now - because i know that there are so many opportunities with openly available stuff.

anyone know if the relapse application is free?

edit: just had a look, it costs around £1.50 i think.

is there a way of getting paid apps for free, without jailbreaking? maybe transferring off someone elses iPhone?

edit: also read a while back about the acer phone. think it was called the Acer A1, also did some research upon the android.

i think i'll go with the iPhone this time round and maybe after those 2 years are up, android will be really huge and will have much more functionality with even more devices, making it better to get an android phone then.

^ you'll need to jailbreak your iPhone if you want to steal software.

if you can't run more than one app at once, you don't qualify
what many of the jailbreakers face when running apps in background is loss in battery life. Of course Casey would turn around and say that such low battery life is epic fail.

Apple has the every right o be cocky, man. Just a couple years in the phone game and they got veterans in the game trying to step their game up. I know lifetime PC users that just love the hell out of their (1st gen!) iPhone. Their ability to make good products is probably what motivates you to criticize it so passionately.

PS. I don't give a fuck about NIN but it sounds like they got it right. Aside from that, if Apple doesn't want to distribute your software, they won't - simple as that. It's a business - not some right you're born with.

I just got a perfect SNES emulator today on my G1 and have been playing Super Mario Kart, Super Mario All Stars, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. That's in addition to my NES and Genesis/MegaDrive emu's. Can your iphone do that?

Nope. Pwned.

Yes. The iPhone is technically capable to playing NES, SNES, PSX and the likes but I got better things to do with my life than to hack my phone so I can have games or have lots of loose options just for the sake of having them.

Technically ;) Which means that there are sluggishly working snes emulators with stylus controls. Good luck with playing mario by pushing 1 button at a time with a stylus (not to mention street fighter). Now IF there was a working psx emulator (which there isn't) that would be fun as hell - just imagine playing psx games with a stylus. I bet that you have better things to do - I guess that most activities would be less frustrating.
Good luck and have fun with console emulators running on iphone.

Even Apple understands that Iphone is made for calling, listening to the music, watching videos and basic internet and messaging functions. They even blocked most useful apps to save users from frustration from trying to use them on their trendy phones.
Come to think of it in my opinion they should also remove messaging functions since it's easier to write a message using text recognition on my 2003 dell axim than tap one on iphone's "virtual keyboard".

You don't have to hack the G1 to install emulators. You can get them directly from the market, because Google doesn't police the market as if it was Communist China and lets the USERS decide what's good and what is not.

Epic win.

Okay you got me. iPhone doesn't play mario with plastic keyboard controls.. it must suck bad as much as you say now.

They even blocked most useful apps
Like what? The hate is just amazing in this place. Every real life person with an iPhone I talk to love it and it handles their day-to-day needs beautifully. They have minor complaints like the low battery life, and when Apple improve on that, you haters need to bash it. Yeah, I hate people with white earphones too, do you want a cookie? Sorry your mommy didn't get you an iPhone for christmas.

People were saying iMac's and iPod's were a trend from the get go. Get over it.

Well, now I'm arguing here just for the hell of it to be honest :p I know that they are a trend and mostly specific type of people buy it -I think it's the same kind of people who either love hip-pop, are emo, die-hard Apple fanboys or are less than 17 years old. I could expand on each group further but it's pointless. I thought that you're also an apple fanboy in the first place.

Yes, I dislike Iphones, but some of my friends use them too and I understand that, heck most of them use them just for calls and internet so most cheaper phones would do their job way better, but they are satisfied with their iphones they got for free anyway. Only one of my friends sold his Iphone because it lagged and he had to reset it all the time. He then got an old school Nokia from his sister and was even more satisfied with it since it was smaller.
The point is that if someone thinks rationally and actually would like to get something more for their money (as any 50$ phone handles calls and texting as good as an iphone) he would get something better for the same price.
It's same as with Apple computers - you can buy a shitty pc, an expensive Apple computer which is better than a shitty pc or build your own high-end high-quality pc for less money and with better specifications. Sure Iphone is not a bad device like let's say shitty LG phones but the point is that there are way better ones in the same price range.
And yes, again I am well aware that Iphones are not meant to deliver functionality for your hard-earned money.

Personally right now I'm using Samsung's Iphone-like phone and the lack of physical keyboard is pissing the hell out of me and the battery life makes me want to just either crash it against the nearest wall or leave it at home as the battery will discharge itself soon after I unplug it from its charger anyway. But hey, at least it's smaller and slimmer than an iphone, has better functions and costs only 3/4 of iphone's value. Actually come to think of it I dislike all Iphone-like phones because of those mentioned above. I'm going to sell it soon and then buy something with a reasonable keyboard like HTC, g1 or Xperia.

the iPhone 3G S sucks. doesn't offer much more than the iPhone 3G. you'd think with all the money they make they could improve their iPhone more than that..

yes, you are right. i agree with you there. some people were hoping for a 5 megapixel camera.

but, if you're buying the iPhone for the first time, isnt the iPhone 3GS a good one to get, if you're only paying about £30 (approx $60) more just for the actual handset itself compared with the iPhone 3G?

yeah, but most people already got the iphone. are they going to upgrade to the new one? apple could have stepped their game up. seriously.

i am not denying the iphone 3g is a great phone. my bf has it, it's fun. i wouldn't buy it for myself but it's fun and useful. but this "upgrade" or as you may want to call it "new iphone" that the 3g s is, is lame.

yeah and if you don't have an iphone yet you might want to consider paying 30 pounds more for 3gs but it's a tought choice imo.
If you don't really care much about those 30ł/60$ then it's worth it.
